Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

We got some pretty heavy hitters launching this past weekend, since Nintendo came out with everything for the cozy genre with Pokémon Pokopia, and Bungie finally revealed the new Marathon.

However, it seems the true star was an indie gem – successfully retracing the massive feat set by Hollow Knight: Silksong last year.

A Record-Breaking Climb Up the Spire

We are talking about Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the highly acclaimed 2019 deckbuilder title from developer Mega Crit, which has just arrived in Early Access and immediately drew an immense number of players.

According to fresh data from SteamDB, the game registered a staggering peak of 574,638 simultaneous players on launch day, catapulting it into the list of the top 20 most-played games in Steam history.

This number puts it just above the massive Battlefield 6 open beta, which got 578,150 players as its highest peak, and incredibly close to the momentum Hollow Knight: Silksong generated during its own launch day peak of 587,569.

Also, looking a bit deeper at the charts, Slay the Spire 2 has officially secured another record: it is now the biggest roguelike deckbuilder ever on Valve’s platform! You can check the impressive numbers of Mega Crit’s newest gem right below:

At the time of this writing, Slay the Spire 2 maintains a strong count of 229,981 concurrent players and is garnering overwhelming praise from both specialized critics and the gaming community alike. In our own coverage, our previewer said that "if this game skipped Early Access entirely, and you just told me this was the 1.0 release, I'd have precisely zero complaints." So it seems we have another indie game in your hands, and you can check out our full preview right here.

The game registered a staggering peak of 574,638 simultaneous players on launch day, catapulting it into the list of the top 20 most-played games in Steam history.

Also, in response to these exorbitant numbers, the team at Mega Crit took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the fans currently braving the deckbuilder. “Our team is TOTALLY blown away by the amount of people who have been playing & sharing their love for the game we've been working on for the past half decade,” they wrote.

The developers also emphasized that they remain focused on making the game “the best that it can be,” while even taking a playful jab at nearly surpassing the striking launch numbers of Silksong in 2025: “also obligatory joke: we'll getcha one day Silksong.”
