You can start farming immediately in Solarpunk, as you acquire the basic requirements during the tutorial, which are seeds, a watering can, and a hoe. This will let you get started with cotton and berries, and that means you can craft cloth and keep yourself fed and hydrated.

Overall, crops don't take too long to grow, and the soil seems to get dry quickly. I felt like I was constantly refilling my watering can and gathering cotton and berries. So, you definitely want to keep an eye on your farm until you're able to visit the trader with an airship and get a sprinkler from them, which makes life a lot easier.

Start by crafting a hoe with three sticks and two stones, and a wooden watering can with four wood, which you'll get from chopping down trees. Next, you need some seeds to plant. This is the easiest part, as every time you harvest a plant, you pick up one seed for that plant. On the beginning island, you can only find cotton and berries, so these are the seeds you can start with.

Once you build an airship, you can travel to other islands to find more crops, such as watermelon and wheat in Solarpunk.

Plant and Grow Crops

The farming system is incredibly similar to that found in Stardew Valley, so if you've played that, you'll figure it out right away. Start by using your hoe to make farmland plots. Then, plant your seeds. Each plot can have one seed placed in it. After that, all you have to do is water the crops and wait for them to grow.

If it rains, you won't have to worry about watering your crops. However, storms can damage your plants if they're fully grown, so make sure you harvest everything that's ripe if it starts storming to avoid losing resources.

When a plant is grown, you can harvest it with the interaction key, which is "E" by default on a keyboard and mouse setup. Harvesting it will give you a seed for the same crop, so you can plant a new one and endlessly grow plants.

Beyond cotton and berries, you need to build an airship and travel to unlock more crops. When you first build an airship, you can fly to the island to the north and pick up watermelons, which you need to unlock airship upgrades. Once you upgrade your airship to level two, you can travel to the east and west islands for wheat, which is needed for bread and more airship upgrades in Solarpunk.

I recommend getting watermelon seeds as soon as you can, and then taking four watermelons to the trader. This will give you a sprinkler, energy generator, and the nodes needed to connect the two. The sprinkler then continuously waters crops around it in a circle as long as the generator has enough fuel to keep the sprinkler running. 10 pieces of wood gives you about 10 minutes of fuel for one sprinkler, and that makes farming a lot easier, especially if you're traveling to other islands in Solarpunk.
