Starfield is having a rocky launch for some PlayStation 5 players, and reports are circulating that Sony is offering refunds upon request due to how the game keeps crashing and freezing on the platform.

Bethesda had a terrible reputation for the launch versions of their games, which commonly had numerous technical issues, with Fallout 76 being the worst of the bunch. When Starfield launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2023, fans were concerned it would run poorly, but it was surprisingly stable, especially for a Bethesda game of such a massive scope.

It seems that the Bethesda curse wasn't dead: it was just resting. As reported by PushSquare, the launch version of Starfield on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro is so bad that Sony has been issuing refunds to those who request them, similar to what happened to Cyberpunk 2077 at launch.

The reports regarding the PlayStation 5 port are puzzling, as some players have said they're 60 hours in and haven't encountered a single glitch, while others are experiencing constant crashes and freezes. Indeed, DualShocker's own Starfield PS5 review only mentioned minor glitches on the base digital PlayStation 5.

The official Bethesda Twitter/X accounts have been silent on the issue, so it's unclear whether a hotfix or a patch is on the way to resolve the problems. If Sony is mass-refunding the game, that should give Bethesda the incentive to release an update quickly.

It's unclear whether mods could be responsible for Starfield's woes, as they are compatible with the PlayStation 5 release. If they are, then it's on the players to delete/disable them, as any issues caused by mods are outside of Bethesda's control.

The PlayStation 5 launch of Starfield was a second chance for the game to find an audience, divorced from pre-launch hype and overshadowed by Baldur's Gate 3. If the glitches are as rampant as fans are reporting, then it seems Starfield is destined to never fly as high as Fallout or The Elder Scrolls.
