Firewall Ultra is shutting down later this year. Awkwardly, the announcement of this happened not via Twitter or Reddit or wherever you might expect. Instead, Sony quietly updated a blog from 2023 celebrating the game’s launch with new text confirming it will be dead by October.
On Wednesday, as spotted by Delisted Games, a post from August 22, 2023 celebrating the release of online-only PSVR2 shooter Firewall Ultra now has a new update at the top from Sony that confirms the live-service VR game will completely shut down and be unplayable after September 17.
Update (March 2026): Online features for Firewall Ultra will be terminated and will no longer be available on September 17, 2026. As you must be online to play this title, this game will no longer be playable starting September 17, 2026 at 10:00am PDT (GMT -7)
Sony has already yanked Firewall Ultra from the PlayStation Store. The studio behind the game, First Contact Entertainment, was dissolved in late 2023. It’s odd that it took this long for Sony to announce Firewall Ultra‘s demise. Meanwhile, Sony has announced the game’s closure via a support page update in Japan. Seems a better way to handle this.
Ironically, the post that Sony updated was not just about Firewall Ultra‘s launch, but also the game’s post-launch road map for new content. A video embedded in the blog post has seemingly been removed from YouTube as well. The entire blog is now a sad artifact about a game that Sony once believed in and is now getting ready to pull the plug on after killing the studio behind it.
In August 2023, Firewall Ultra launched on PS5 exclusively for PSVR2. It was a sequel to the original Firewall shooter for the OG PSVR that proved to be one of the peripheral’s biggest hits. Unfortunately, Firewall Ultra didn’t fare well with fans or critics and is now going away forever. Meanwhile, the original Firewall is still alive and kicking.
