The Nope star talks sharing the screen with Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, and Mel Brooks in the upcoming sci-fi spoof
Photo: Cinetext Collection/Sportsphoto/AllstarThe sequel to Mel Brooks's 1987 Star Wars spoof Spaceballs will arrive in 2027, but beyond its cast reveal inspired by The Force Awakens and a hilarious announcement video, we know very little about it. Returning for Spaceballs 2 are Rick Moranis (his first live-action role in 27 years) as Dark Helmet, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, George Wyner presumably as Colonel Sandurz, and Mel Brooks (presumably again) as both Yogurt and President Skroob.
Even less is known about the newcomers to the cast, which include Lewis Pullman, Josh Gad, Anthony Carrigan, and Keke Palmer. All we know is the younger Pullman is reportedly playing Starburst, son of Lone Starr and Vespa (potentially in a Kylo Ren-esque role), while Palmer is playing a new character named Destiny.
In a recent interview for Palmer’s upcoming Peacock series The ‘Burbs, Polygon caught up with the Emmy-winning actress and asked whether she could share any details about her role in Spaceballs 2, but she was refreshingly upfront, saying, “No, I can’t actually.”
She did, however, gush about the experience of making the film.
“The kids love this one.”“What I can tell you is that the movie was so fun to film,” Palmer said. “I couldn’t believe that I was working with Rick Moranis, that blew my freaking mind, Bill Pullman is like the best. Lewis Pullman, also awesome. Josh Greenbaum, amazing director. Josh Gad, the whole writing team — honestly, it was one of the best times of my life. I can’t wait for people to see this movie, and it really pisses me off that it won’t be happening until 2027.”
When asked if she got to work with Brooks himself, Palmer teased, “That will be interesting for you guys [the audience] to see.”
Although her response was vague, it suggests she appears in a scene with him, perhaps as a Force Ghost, in a way that would allow him to film his parts separately, given the fact that Brooks is 99 years old.
Released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs is a cult classic inspired by Star Wars and riffing on other sci-fi classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The story follows Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks) as they try to steal the planet Druidia’s atmosphere, only to be stopped by Lone Starr (Pullman), Barf (John Candy), and Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). The cast also includes Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten. Despite earning just over $38.1 million worldwide, the film’s legacy has left a lasting impression.
Spaceballs 2 is slated for release sometime in 2027.
