After years of many fearing the dreaded “video game adaptation curse” in movies and TV shows, it seems like Hollywood simply cannot get enough of video games right now! That’s because, over the last few years, we have seen an explosion of digital worlds making the leap to the big and small screens, with networks and studios turning everything from post-apocalyptic survival hits to indie gems into cinematic projects.

Now, we can officially add Sea of Thieves to the ever-growing list of video games receiving the live-action treatment, and Xbox seems determined to make sure this pirate adventure hits the ground running.

Spider-Man Brand New Day Director to Produce Sea of Thieves Film Adaptation for Xbox 2

According to a recent report by Entertainment Weekly, the incredibly popular pirate game developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios is being turned into a live-action feature film.

To make things even more exciting, the studio has managed to secure a Hollywood heavyweight to lead the charge behind the scenes, with the acclaimed filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton officially set to produce the upcoming adaptation.

In case you are not familiar with that name, Cretton is best known across the entertainment industry for his work on Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters, such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set to hit theaters soon in late July. Having someone with his extensive background handling such a unique and dynamic world like Sea of Thieves definitely leaves both MCU and gaming fans curious, to say the least!

While Cretton is locked in as a producer, it seems that the project has yet to receive a director, meaning the search is still on for the creative mind who will actually call the shots on set.

Xbox seems determined to make sure this pirate adventure hits the ground running.

Naturally, translating an open-world, multiplayer sandbox game into a structured, narrative-driven movie is no easy task. Unlike games with strict linear stories like The Last of Us or Super Mario Bros., Rare’s pirate simulator doesn't follow a single main hero on a predetermined quest. Instead, it relies entirely on players making their own fun on the high seas, which certainly gives a lot of creative freedom to the folks behind the live-action film.

Matt Booty, Xbox’s chief content officer, already shed some light on this unique challenge while speaking to EW, opening up about the creative direction and the exact tone we can expect from the film. “The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community,” he explained. “So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not [about] the main characters [or] the plot. It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like.”

To be completely honest with you, Booty’s comments do not help me much when trying to picture how the actual movie story will play out. However, I truly hope it follows a path similar to what Prime Video’s Fallout series achieved, since that show took the established world and the specific quirks of the franchise to paint something completely new on top of it – and it perfectly paraphrases what Todd Howard said in the past about wanting to tell brand-new stories in other media rather than just retelling the exact ones players have already experienced in the games.

Either way, we will have to wait a bit longer to find out who will direct the film and who will fill out the main pirate crew, as the project is still in its very early stages of development. But knowing that Xbox is actively expanding its cinematic portfolio with top-tier talent is quite exciting for the future of the brand. I'm definitely eager to see how this one shapes up, and you can bet we will be keeping a very close eye on the horizon for more updates.
