STALKER 2 Cost of Hope Release Date and Features Confirmed

Almost two years have passed since STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl's troubled launch, but what was once a struggling, promising title has blossomed into one of the best survival games ever made. As if that wasn't enough, the game is now set for its biggest post-launch milestone yet, and we finally have a release date for it.

Following months of anticipation, GSC Game World has officially announced the release date for the STALKER 2: Cost of Hope DLC. The first paid expansion for its flagship title is coming out on August 20, and even if you don't jump onto the bandwagon, the update containing it will bring plenty of features to the base game for free.

Into the Heart of the Zone

The STALKER 2: Cost of Hope expansion centers around two diametrically opposite factions and characters. Skif will have to team up with Zulu and Mavka in the search for answers.

Zulu is a member of Duty, a group of zealots that broke off from the Ukrainian military in the early days of the Zone to try and contain it, hoping to protect the rest of the world. Zulu is a returning fan-favorite, following his bombastic appearance in the late stages of STALKER: Call of Pripyat, where he led protagonist Degtyaryov and his team into the outskirts of the city through the infested tunnels.

Standing side by side with Zulu is Mavka, the Freedom-affiliated sharpshooter whom you might recognize as the announcer's voice in the Rostok Arena. Very little is known about her other than her vocal dislike of Freedom's current leader, Myklukha. As the name implies, Freedom takes a laissez-faire approach to the Zone, seeing it as a land of opportunity rather than a hazard.

Little is known about how Skif, Mavka, and Zulu's paths cross, but we know this unusual alliance will take the trio into the heart of the Zone, including the ruins of the nuclear powerplant where it all started in 1986.

The Cost of Waiting for a DLC

Now, additional story content is definitely cool, but what most stalkers have been waiting for even more are the patch notes expected to come with it.

The Cost of Hope expansion will be introduced concurrently with the STALKER 2 version 2.0, which is touted as the biggest patch to the game yet.

Although GSC has not released a full list of what to expect, we know that this update will mark STALKER 2's transition to Unreal Engine 5.5.4. This engine upgrade should make the game less resource-intensive, while also improving visuals in certain specific areas like glass rendering. Mutant behavior is also getting improvements, though just what these will be is not clear yet.

Gunslingers are going to enjoy the new weapons confirmed to be added with 2.0. So far, the following guns have been identified in promotional materials:

Fort-230 submachine gun
Vepr-12 semi-automatic shotgun
G3 battle rifle
HK51 battle rifle
HK433 assault rifle
SKS-31 carbine

Alongside new weapons, version 2.0 of STALKER 2 is also bringing new attachments to existing weapons. One of the most anticipated ones (and strange omissions from the initial launch) is the ability to place a Picatinny rail adapter on dovetail mounts, such as those found on the AKM-74/2 assault rifle that is endemic to the Zone.

Getting such a massive update this long after release is a bittersweet moment for XBOX players. Microsoft's gaming arm was a major backer of STALKER 2's troubled development, and one of the rewards for this was having it come to Game Pass on launch.

The honeymoon only lasted so long, however. In the same month as its release on the PlayStation 5, barely a year after its launch and just as the game had become a polished product, STALKER 2 was removed from Game Pass.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available on PC, XBOX Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. The Cost of Hope DLC launches on October 20, but pricing details have not been revealed yet.
