There are three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and Star Fox 64 living on.
After much speculation, we’re getting a new Star Fox game in the year of our lord 2026 for the Nintendo Switch 2. Of course, by new, I mean another remake and reimagination of Star Fox 64, which itself is a remake/reboot of the original Star Fox for the Super Nintendo.
The surprise announcement came out of the blue. Literally; Nintendo announced the thing with a 6 PM Eastern Star Fox Direct on a random Wednesday evening in May with zero heads-up.
10 Things a New Star Fox Game Needs
A new Star Fox game is in the rumor mill, and we've got some ideas for it.
To Nintendo’s credit, they’re enhancing Star Fox with a “cinematic take” (their words) on the iconic Nintendo 64 classics. This includes new voice acting, dialogue, and cutscenes. Beyond that, there’s the addition of challenge modes, online 4v4 battles, and more.
Star Fox will also take advantage of Nintendo Switch 2 features, including the Joy-Con 2’s mouse controls. You’ll also be able to split the Joy-Con 2 controller with a friend and have one person pilot the Arwing while the other uses the ship’s weapons as a gunner. There's also undoubtedly the coolest use of the Nintendo Switch 2's camera thus far with the GameChat Character Avatar and AR Filters. Star Fox will capture your facial movements and translate them in-game as one of the Star Fox characters.
I'm glad that Star Fox is finally back and launching so soon when it releases on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25th, but I can't help but feel a little nervous.
Star Fox Still Deserves a New Game
I want to preface this by saying I am so glad we're finally getting a Star Fox game. Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time. I replay it constantly, and it continues to age well today.
There's something about the game's pacing that feels so right. The mission length is right, the combat feels fantastic, and the back-and-forth banter between the team never gets old, especially from Falco.
Nintendo tried several times during the GameCube era to move past Star Fox 64, but to no avail. Star Fox Adventures is fun, but let's be honest: it's not a Star Fox game. Star Fox Assault, however, is a Star Fox game, but honestly, I wouldn't call it a good one. The combat just didn't feel right, and it didn't have the magic of Star Fox 64.

With all that being said, I understand why they've remade Star Fox 64 so many times. It's an all-timer for a reason, and with Fox back in the spotlight following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the time is right for the franchise to return. Doing so in a way that's already been done, though, is disappointing. Why not try to salvage what was lost from Star Fox Armada?
There are so many parts of the Star Fox Direct that felt off, particularly the voice acting. I'm glad that we're seeing an expanded focus on the game's story, and I hope the prologue with James McCloud is playable, but it's nearly 30 years old, and I want to see something new from the Star Fox crew. I will say, though, that the rumored price of roughly $40 makes it a little easier to swallow.
