The visionary behind Steam is leading a life most of us could never dream of
Why count to three when Gabe Newell is rolling around in the millions? It's no secret that the cherished Valve CEO is loaded — Valve made an estimated $17 billion in revenue in 2025 — but it's not often that the gaming community gets to see what that wealth looks like in action. Heck, it's not often that we get to see Newell at all!
But here he is, in a promo video for Oceanco, the yacht company that he purchased in November 2025. The video is meant to show off all the services Oceanco provides for its clients, as well as the tricked-out facilities packed into the yachts. Beyond offerings like gyms, catering, and instrument-filled jam rooms, there's also an obligatory gaming room on the mega yacht called Leviathan. You know, in case you want to pay an unfathomable amount of money to go out into the ocean just to ignore everything and play Counter-Strike instead. Hilariously, the cost of RAM for those machines might be significantly higher than the costs associated with flashier amenities on the ship.
Newell, who has an estimated $9.5 billion net worth, also has a lengthy, documented fascination with all things marine. Back in 2023, Newell purchased an oceanic firm that operates submarines capable of deep-sea exploration. Unlike the ill-fated Titan submarine, Newell's submersibles are used by scientists to gather data on the farthest reaches of the briny deep.
Gabe Newell is also a diving obsessive. In late 2025, the PC czar noted that his daily routine typically involves up to two scuba dives. The man basically lives on a boat. It was only a matter of time before Newell became involved in a company like Oceanco, which could theoretically provide him with the best boating life possible.
By nature, Newell's yacht company is a luxury service — and a highly bespoke one at that. Oceanco's website informs potential customers that the company is more than ready to meet any need by building a boat from scratch. Newell's video game background actually comes into play with Oceanco's business approach. The company notes that the craftspeople who build the yachts use, among other things, "tech usually reserved for game devs and mad scientists" to innovate their designs. Oceanco's offerings also very much sound like the games-as-a-service model, but for the ultra-wealthy.
A web page describing Oceanco's business proposal asks, "What if your yacht evolves with you?" The idea is that, beyond providing basic crew and facilities, Oceanco also looks for ways to upgrade, rebuild, and refit its mega-yachts to ensure everything stays state-of-the-art.
So when you hear Gabe Newell say things like, "The kinds of things I get to do every day are super awesome," this is what he means. Sure, he's still involved with Valve if not the world of video games to a certain extent — Newell was most recently in the news for apparently trying to help Hideo Kojima get to outer space. But while commenters are looking for clues about Half-Life 3 left and right, videos like these make it even clearer that Gabe Newell is in an entirely different orbit than us mere plebes.
