The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the biggest box office hit of the year so far, earning $942 million worldwide since releasing on April 1. The manic, nostalgia-packed sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be available to watch at home for the first time on May 19, and the release is especially good news for fans who loved all the film’s references to other Nintendo games.

The zippy, chaotic film follows Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) as they try to rescue Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) from the clutches of Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). Along with visiting wild locations like a koopa amusement park and an underground gambling den, the movie focuses on family as Peach seeks to learn where she came from while Bowser Jr. tries to impress his dad Bowser (Jack Black) with his villainous ambitions. The filmmakers also set up a sequel, which seems all but guaranteed given The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s commercial success.

The home release from Nintendo and Illumination adds an hour of new material, including interviews with the cast and filmmakers about how they created the cosmic adventure. Composer Brian Tyler shares how he turned video game music into a cinematic score while the filmmakers explain how they chose the power-ups to include and point out some of the many Easter eggs hidden in the film.

The digital launch will be followed by 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions releasing on June 16. The movie will likely stream first on NBCUniversal’s Peacock service about two months later.
