The Super Mario Galaxy Movie one-ups its predecessor in terms of adding new Nintendo characters and locations, but also in Super Mario power-up representation. While 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie played the hits, with items like the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Super Star, Galaxy digs a little deeper into Mario and Luigi's catalog of superpowered items.

Some familiar items return in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, including the Bowser-cooling Ice Flower and embiggening Super Mushroom, but the filmmakers also worked the Penguin Suit, Red Star, Cloud Flower, and Drill Mushroom into action scenes. That's on top of appearances from power-ups like Super Mario Bros. 3's Frog Suit, Super Mario World's Cape Feather, and Super Mario Galaxy 2's Blimp Fruit. In a new clip from the bonus features included with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's digital release, the film's creators explain why they went so power-up-heavy in the sequel, and why certain powers return.

"I think it speaks to our sensibility on this movie and taking things that are cute and adorable and putting them in situations where they become high action," says The Super Mario Galaxy Movie co-director Michael Jelenic, referencing Toad's appearance in Penguin Suit form. Co-director Aaron Horvath touches on the inclusion of Cloud Luigi, noting just how outlandish it is for Mario's twin brother to bring a fluffy cloud to a Bowser fight.

"One thing we definitely heard from fans — and we felt as well — was that we never saw Mario and Luigi get the Fire [Flower] power-up," says writer Matthew Fogel. "That’s why that’s the first power-up they get [in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie]."

With hundreds of power-ups in the Super Mario canon, there's still plenty of fodder for future Mario movies to get a little cute and kooky. Will we ever get Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Elephant Peach on the big screen? If Mario movies keep making Nintendo and Illumination billions, then yes.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now available for purchase on digital platforms. The animated hit will come to 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on June 16. The home releases include over an hour of new bonus content, including "a guided deep dive into the Easter eggs hidden throughout the film, exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the all-star cast and more," according to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
