In a true convergence of Gen Z things, the viral animated show The Amazing Digital Circus is coming to Fortnite. Specifically, Jax and Pomni will be added as skins, while Zooble will be a pickaxe — poor Gangle, who seemed most enthusiastic about the whole thing, didn’t make it onto the Battle Bus.

The announcement trailer made clear that the crossover is a natural fit, with a funny bit about how Pomni would normally be too short to make sense in the game; of course, Caine’s solution was to stretch her limbs like she was taken to the rack. There's a charm to when characters make it into Fortnite despite having no business being in a third-person shooter (e.g., Naruto with an AK-47), but Jax, Pomni, and Zooble appearing in the game works as a natural extension of their "trapped in a video game" nightmare existence, which is fun in its own way.

For those who’ve never heard of The Amazing Digital Circus, it’s an animated web series that’s gained a massive following after racking up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. The pilot, released in late 2023 by Glitch Productions, has since received over 440 million views. It follows Pomni, a young woman who becomes trapped in a hellish virtual reality circus. Inspired by an eclectic mix of influences, from the unnerving short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream to the hellish CGI anime Popee the Performer, the series’ mixture of dark comedy and existential dread has clearly struck a chord.

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, a theatrical release of the show’s final two episodes, beat out Scary Movie and Backrooms during its box office debut last Thursday with a $7.8 million gross, before dramatically outpacing projections with $36.6 million in its first weekend. While the film was initially planned for a four-day limited release by Fathom Events in the U.S., the distributor extended its theatrical window until June 18, a day before the finale airs on YouTube and Netflix. The film’s success underscores a year of unexpected hits driven by younger audiences, such as the horror films Obsession and Backrooms.
