Paramount released the first trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3, and it really takes the piss out of parenting. The big news is that Red, the titular angry bird, is now a dad. The other big news is that this trailer is full of bathroom humor; the sheer amount of time spent on a pee joke is something else. The movie is in theaters on Dec. 23, just in time for the holidays.

The trailer begins with a shot of a stadium (a clear allusion to the ongoing World Cup mania), before an abrupt about-face reveals that this is a parenting movie. They very much play the hits in that regard: we’ve got emotionally distant teens, a baby that loves to endanger itself, a joke about not letting kids drink soda, and a diaper change gone extremely wrong.

Two years ago, the Angry Birds YouTube page announced that a third film was in production. The fact that this adaptation of a largely plotless mobile game where the player slingshots avians at fortified swine is getting a third film is a reminder that, if nothing else, these movies have made a lot of money.

The Angry Birds Movie was released in 2016 to middling reviews and an impressive $352.3 million worldwide gross. Whether it was thanks to the star power of names like Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Sean Penn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Bill Hader, or because it was basically the only animated movie in theaters when it came out and parents needed a 97-minute break from their children, a lot of people went to see it.

The sequel, which centered on a truce between the birds and the pigs, was much better received by critics, and while it didn’t perform quite as well at the box office, it proved a huge hit on Netflix. The big N eventually produced the animated TV series Angry Birds: Summer Madness.

In the seven-year gap since the last film, Paramount has taken over from Sony as the distributor of the franchise. Jason Sudeikis returns as Red, with Josh Gad, Danny McBride, and Rachel Bloom coming back as well. Tim Robinson is in the cast, as well as MrBeast, for some reason.

While it is incredibly unlikely that the film will outshine The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is currently the best-performing movie of 2026 with over a billion worldwide at the box office, that amount of success shows there’s still an audience for animated films based on video games. We’ll find out if that extends to Red’s adventure in fatherhood later this year.
