Disney and Lucasfilm have recently released the first four episodes of the critically acclaimed Disney+ animated series, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, the first major series to have the former Sith Zabrak in a leading and starring role.
While there aren't any Star Wars game releases to coincide with this show's release, the show has caused many SW fans to reflect on Maul's appearances in games given his and voice actor Sam Witwer's long history tied with video games.

10 Great Xbox 360 Games That Are Fun from the Start
These 10 Xbox 360 games are immediately fun from the start and remain that way in single-player or in multiplayer playthroughs.
To celebrate the first four episodes of Shadow Lord, here's a list of the 10 best video games to feature Darth Maul so far, regardless of their status in modern SW canon.
So far, Darth Maul has appeared in over 20 video games since his first debut in 1999's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
10 Fortnite
Dancing to the Dark Side
Despite being a ruthless wielder of the dark side of the force, many of Maul's appearances in video games are rather comedic in nature, as seen in his most recent gaming appearance in Fortnite.
Maul first appeared in Fortnite in 2023 during the second season of the game's Chapter 4, which saw multiple Star Wars characters and items appear in Battle Royale and as cosmetics in the online shop.
Maul's traditional Sith apprentice skin was available for purchase from Fortnite's shop or earning Galactic Reputation alongside a LEGO version of the skin usable in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, but he was also able to appear as a hologram NPC in Battle Royale matches as a way for players to temporarily gain access to the Sith Apprentice Lightsaber.
9 LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game
The Most Menacing Minifigure
LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game
For gamers who grew up in the early 2000s, one of Maul's most intimidating appearances, despite not speaking at all and in LEGO form, was in LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game.
The first LEGO game ever developed by Traveller's Tales, LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game was a LEGO, slapstick comedy adaptation of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, with Maul only appearing in the final level for Episode I, Chapter 6: Darth Maul.
While this was Maul's first minifigure appearance in a video game, he still managed to be quite threatening, with him throwing explosives, lifts, and bikes at players with the Force and stabbing Qui-Gon Jinn to the death before yelling menacingly after being cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi.
8 Star Wars: Racer Revenge
A Secret, Shocking Racer
Most of Darth Maul's video game appearances are tied to his role in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, but they're often done with a fun twist, as seen in the 2002 racing game, Star Wars: Racer Revenge.
Racer Revenge is actually set eight years after Phantom Menace, with Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba reigniting their podracing rivalry in a new galactic podracing tournament to see who can be crowned podracing champion.
Maul doesn't appear in Racer Revenge's main campaign, but he can be unlocked as a secret racer with his very own maxed out stat, Scimitar-inspired podracer by getting the highest KO count on each track.

7 Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles
Maul's First Great Boss Fight
Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles
One of the best Star Wars games that's solely based on the events of Phantom Menace is the third-person, co-op action game Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles and, as such, Darth Maul appears in the game a few times.
Darth Maul is Jedi Power Battles' main boss, with him first appearing on Tatooine in a brief fight just before Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and the Naboo leave the planet for Coruscant and him later appearing at the end of the game for a prolonged platforming boss fight in the Naboo's Plasma Refinery Complex.
What makes Maul's appearance in Jedi Power Battles even more fun is that after players beat the game once as Qui-Gon, they'll unlock Maul as a playable character, allowing players to relive the events of Phantom Menace as Maul, fighting droids, Tusken Raiders, and other hostile creatures.
6 Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)
An Overpowered Villain
Pandemic Studios' original 2005 Star Wars: Battlefront II is an absolute classic, not just among SW games but among games released during the sixth console generation overall, and Maul played a minor but highly memorable role in making this game so great.
Battlefront II's campaign is set during the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, so Maul doesn't appear in that at all, but he does appear in several levels as a playable villain for the CIS during PvP or PvE matches on Coruscant, Mustafar, Naboo, Polis Massa, Rhen Var, Tatooine, and Yavin IV.
Maul is easily one of the most powerful heroes/villains in the game thanks to his rapid and deadly skills with his double-bladed lightsaber and Saber Throw and Force Push abilities, being easily able to quickly take out large groups of Clone Troopers and vehicles alike.
5 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Sam Witwer's Version of The Phantom Menace
Ever since Sam Witwer played Maul during his revival in Cartoon Network's 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, the American actor has been the primary voice actor for Maul in practically every succeeding appearance of the character, but he didn't get a chance to play Maul's Phantom Menace role until LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
While Maul does appear in more scenes here than in the original LEGO Star Wars game, Maul is still primarily regulated to a boss fight towards the end of Phantom Menace, though this time he keeps on fighting until only his head remains and is subsequently thrown down a pit through a basketball hoop.
Witwer's role as Maul in this game truly stands out when people play as him in Skywalker Saga's open-world and interact with objects and other characters, such as him commenting about how he will no longer commit to half-measures or General Grievous complimenting Maul for his impressive lightsaber.

4 Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)
The Return of an Old Master
When DICE brought back Star Wars Battlefront in 2015, many fans were upset that it only featured factions from the original trilogy. Thankfully, 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II not only included the sequel trilogy factions, but also brought back the prequel trilogy factions with Darth Maul representing the era on the game's cover.
Here, Witwer reprises his role as Maul, but this time, Maul could be played on any map for the villain factions, allowing the angry Zabrak to slice and dice Clone Troopers, Rebel soldiers, and Resistance fighters on the ground, while in space battles, Maul can fight opposing starfigthers from his Scimitar Star Courier.
What makes playing as Maul in Battlefront II especially fun is his alternate outfit players can unlock based on his cyborg appearance from Star Wars Rebels and an emote which has Maul scream Kenobi in the same manner from his final appearance in Rebels' third season.
3 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
A Skater Unlike Any Other
The early 2000s was a highly experimental time period for video games, and this is possibly best exemplified in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, which, despite being a modern skateboarding game, featured numerous guest skaters from other franchises, such as Doom Guy from Doom and Wolverine from Marvel Comics.
One of the most bizarre yet incredibly fun guest skaters in Pro Skater 3 is Darth Maul himself, who can be unlocked by completing all 54 goals and obtaining all gold medals in Career mode as Tony Hawk or by entering the cheat codes FREAKSHOW or YOHOMIES.
Unfortunately, Maul wasn't brought back in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 due to licensing issues, but he can still be used in the original Pro Skater 3, grinding on rails and performing air tricks, lightsaber in-hand just as Darth Sidious intended.
2 Disney Infinity 3.0
The Shadow Collective's Most Surprising Plot
Oddly enough, one of the best uses of Maul in a video game was in the toys-to-life action-adventure game Disney Infinity 3.0, which brought Star Wars characters from all three trilogies into Disney Infinity's playable toybox.
While Maul can be immediately playable using his real-world DI figure, his best appearance in the game is actually in the Twilight of the Republic campaign set during the Clone Wars, which has Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka Tano, and Yoda investigate the mysterious activation of a battle droid factory on Geonosis.
It's eventually revealed that the droid factory wasn't activated by the CIS, but was rather activated by Maul's Shadow Collective and his legion of Mandalorian Super Commandos, with Maul, played once again by Witwer, planning to use the droids to eliminate the leaders of the Republic and the CIS.
1 Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The Beginning of Sam Witwer's Star Wars Career
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
While the use of Maul's Shadow Collective in Disney Infinity was a pleasant surprise, the best appearance of Darth Maul in a video game is still, without a doubt, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
The first project to feature Witwer in the starring role as Darth Vader's secret apprentice, Starkiller, Force Unleashed only features Maul in a brief but incredibly shocking and awesome role.
Towards the end of the game, on the Imperial-controlled planet Raxus Prime, Starkiller's holodroid PROXY uses a secret module of Darth Maul he's been saving to finally achieve his primary directive to kill Starkiller, resulting in an epic boss fight between two of Witwer's most iconic Star Wars roles.
