We're firmly in the second half of the year, and ahead of a massive September with several high-profile releases, August is shaping up to be a noteworthy opening act. Between a Marvel fighting game that's aiming to push the tag-fighter concept to new levels, a return to a galaxy far (far!) away for some tactical sci-fi strategy, and the unhinged chaos of Australian Rules Football, there's plenty on the horizon that'll be eating into any free time you've been trying to save up.

ReStory
- Release date: August 6

One of the best demos of the June Steam Next Fest was ReStory, a wholesome game about running a little electronics repair shop. Not just a fun game about disassembling and cleaning gaming consoles--including some classic Atari hardware–the game also features a story, cute characters, and some admin on the side as you manage finances while improving your skills. Throw in a lo-fi soundtrack that helps you get into the zone and satisfying repair gameplay mechanics, and this could be the cozy sleeper hit of the month.
Beast of Reincarnation

Game Freak and co-developer Fictions aren't waiting until the end of August to drop their new game, a one-person and one-dog post-apocalyptic adventure. Blending Sekiro-like and tactical-RPG gameplay, Beast of Reincarnation is shaping up to be something special--and we also can't get enough of those wonderful parrying "PING" sound effects, either.
Big Walk

Untitled Goose Game developer House House makes its return in August with Big Walk, and this time, peace is an option. A cooperative game that revolves around talking and walking--fans of The West Wing will probably dig it--the goal is to explore a massive open-world environment. House House has added several other methods for communication. There's no real danger in this world, and the Australian walkabout vibes could make this the next big social hit.
Lies of P: Complete Edition

If the high-risk, high-reward gameplay in Beast of Reincarnation isn't enough for you, you can also check out Lies of P on Switch 2 this month. The Lies of P: Complete Edition is launching as a digital game first--a physical version will follow on October 2--and it includes the base game plus every DLC and post-launch update for the original release. In case you missed it when it first came out, Lies of P reimagines the story of Pinocchio as a Bloodborne-inspired romp that mixes an elegant art direction with grueling boss battles and twisted remixes of classic fairy tales.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls

Earth's mightiest mortals are squaring up for a 4v4 clash this month, and with Guilty Gear developer Arc System Works at the helm, this should be a Marvel main event to savor. Not only do you have one of the best studios in the fighting game genre reimagining heroes and supervillains as brawlers, but they're also putting their own visual stamp on these icons with fresh redesigns and cool costumes.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

More than a year has passed since The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered made its surprise debut on PC and consoles, and finally, Switch 2 owners can take that game on the road with them. The Switch 2 version of Oblivion Remastered will include all the same content as last year's release, and there's also a Deluxe Edition with the full game on the cartridge that includes additional weapons, armor, and other cosmetics. An updated edition of Bethesda's classic 2006 action-RPG, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, modernizes the game with improved graphics, a sprinting mechanic, a new user interface, menus that are much easier to navigate, and various quality-of-life improvements. Bethesda says that the Switch 2 version will run at 900p and 30fps in handheld mode, or 1080p and 30fps docked.
Grounded 2

Obsidian is now focused on expanding the world of Fallout--and has been hit hard by Microsoft's sweeping layoffs at Xbox--but the studio is also preparing for the PlayStation 5 launch of Grounded 2 this month. Arriving alongside the Into the Abyss update, PS5 owners can check out the early access survival-crafting game and see how it has grown over the months since it first launched.
Pro Jank Footy

Australian Rules Football is easily the toughest contact sport on the planet--and no, slap-fighting doesn't count--and it's being brought to life as a retro-inspired romp in August. As if the original game wasn't brutal enough, Pro Jank Footy reimagines the sport with high-energy arcade sensibility--think classic '90s games like NBA Jam and NHL '94. It packs random power-ups from a pool of over 150 and plenty of absurdist comedy. It should be a ripper when Australia's greatest sport hits PC and consoles.
Wild Blue Skies

The new new remake of Star Fox 64 is a pretty decent game, but Wild Blue Skies looks like it'll show Fox McCloud a thing or two when it takes off. Legally distinct from Nintendo's cult-classic on-rails shooter, Wild Blue Skies shares some similar DNA with it, including fast-paced shooting and anthropomorphic animal pilots. Billed as a modern take on the classic adventures of the '90s, it looks like a colorful blast from the past that's easy to learn. If you're on PC, you can grab a demo for it right now.
Duskfade

If you've been feeling nostalgic for an old-school third-person adventure in the same vein as Jak and Daxter, then don't sleep on Duskfade. Weird Beluga Studio's love letter to action-platformer classics of the past looks and plays great--check out the demo if you're on PC--and it also features a striking clockpunk aesthetic that helps it stand out from the pack. A heartfelt tribute to the golden age of 3D action-platformers, the game also has a mature angle to its tale, as it deals with themes of loss and grief.
EA Sports Madden NFL 27

While most annual sports franchises offer iterative improvements year-over-year, EA’s Madden series has been an exception to that rule. This year’s edition looks like it’ll introduce another set of sweeping changes under the hood, building on Madden NFL 26’s upgrades that saw the additions of Coach abilities, playsheets, weekly strategies, and much more. The biggest change this year is the introduction of the Persona Engine, which EA says will help turn the NFL experience into a dynamic game.
Hell Let Loose: Vietnam

Originally scheduled to launch in June, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam emerges from behind development lines in August. The 50v50 multiplayer shooter offers a hardcore alternative to games like Battlefield and Call of Duty, as players will have to hunker down, establish lines of communication, and work as a team to survive the harsh jungles of Vietnam.
Mafia: The Old Country - Man of Honor

Mafia: The Old Country was a sleeper hit last year, as the moderate price, surprisingly high production values, and rock-solid gameplay made it a digestible experience. If you've been looking to return to Sicily, you can do just that in the Man of Honor expansion. Priced at $10, the expansion adds two more story chapters to the game, and it follows Enzo Favara on an assignment to assist Ennio Salieri, the iconic Mafia series villain. Alongside the new chapters, Free Ride mode is also being expanded, and you can add to Enzo's arsenal with new weapons, vehicles, and charms.
The Sinking City 2

The first Sinking City game from Frogwares was a flawed gem when it was first released several years ago, and for the sequel, the studio is diving into a world of survival-horror. We're still concerned that The Sinking City 2 is playing it a little safe as it mixes mystery with Lovecraftian-inspired dread, but Frogwares has been known to pull off a few surprises with its games, like the brilliant Sherlock Holmes adventures. At the very least, it looks like a comfortable thriller, and for genre fans, slipping into a well-worn pair of horror-pants might be a winning idea.
Mortal Shell 2

Six years after the first Mortal Shell game launched, players can once again step into a world of cold steel and challenging souls-like action. Developer Cold Symmetry isn't aiming to give From Software a few sleepless nights, as the studio has designed a world that is deliberately compact, respects your time, and features unlockable Shells to collect across dozens of dungeons--including some gooner armor. Billed as a standalone sequel, you won't need any experience with the first Mortal Shell game to play the sequel.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2

It's time for another bug hunt! Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 sees the gung-ho action of the first game make a comeback, but this time, developers Cold Iron Studios and Daybreak Game Company are turning it up to 11. Squads have been expanded into four-person teams, player classes are being improved, and a new Specialist role will allow players to mix abilities to create the ultimate Colonial Marine. Alongside a bigger arsenal of weapons, the game will also feature all-new Xenomorphs to menace your team, including one new variant that takes free hugs to a new extreme.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2

A fresh batch of Metal Gear Solid games is sneaking onto PC and console this month, with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots headlining the new arrivals. Trapped for years in PlayStation 3 purgatory, the finale to the series has been unplayable on modern systems for almost two decades now. Additionally, you can also check out 2000’s Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel--which was also a Game Boy Color exclusive--as well as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and various extras.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

Previous games in the Plague Tale series were harrowing adventures--with an obscene number of rats--but Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a significant departure from its predecessors. Set 15 years before the events of the main games, Resonance follows the smuggler Sophia on her journey to the Minotaur’s Island. The gameplay shifts away from stealth and rat-manipulation, focusing more on exploration, combat, and puzzles. The result? A game full of surprisingly satisfying combat and some real head-scratcher puzzles that makes it feel like a spiritual successor to classic Assassin's Creed adventures.
Star Wars Zero Company

The Star Wars galaxy has been home to several action-packed games over the last couple of years--and an upcoming Burnout-inspired racer later in 2026--but in August, the franchise is flexing its tactical muscles. Star Wars Zero Company is a new strategy game featuring an elite squad of operatives in turn-based tactical skirmishes, and with former Firaxis developers leading the charge, this should scratch the itch for some XCOM-like tactics, with a dash of Fire Emblem for good measure. Set during the twilight of the Clone Wars, the Bit Reactor-developed game follows a group of unique characters as they hunt down the leader of a Separatist-aligned cult, who poses a threat to the entire galaxy.
Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

After a lengthy delay, Elden Ring is finally launching for Switch 2 this month. Originally scheduled to arrive in 2025, the game was delayed for performance adjustments, which is a nice way of Bandai Namco and From Software saying that it was in rough shape back then. Almost a year later, Elden Ring looks much better in action, offering a consistent level of performance in both docked and handheld modes--from what we've seen so far. The Switch 2 edition includes the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, as well as four new armor sets, two new starting classes, and more.
