Amazon announced on Tuesday that the series finale of The Boys will debut in theaters the day before it arrives on the streaming service. Eric Kripke's dark superhero show, inspired by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comics series of the same name, has been building up to an explosive finish, as Homelander (Antony Starr) seizes control of America's government and runs the country through a cadre of superpowered followers, leading to a series of dramatic character deaths. Amazon decided the season 5 finale episode, which will also wrap up the series' five-season run, is big enough for theatrical screens: The episode will debut in theaters on May 19 before coming to Prime Video on May 20.

It's the latest in a recent series of promotional events bringing popular TV shows to movie screens. Netflix aired the Stranger Things series finale in theaters in December 2025. HBO brought the season 2 finale of its medical drama The Pitt to Alamo Drafthouse theaters ahead of its streaming debut in April. The mega-viral animated series The Amazing Digital Circus will premiere its series finale in theaters in June. With theater owners continually looking for ways to drive up attendance, and studios looking for ways to make their shows stand out in a crowded marketplace, the one-night-only theatrical-event finale is a natural synergy.

Details weren't immediately available about the "4DX" aspects of the finale screenings for The Boys. Typically, 4DX shows involve real-world elements targeting the audience, including seats that rumble during explosive action moments, and sometimes sprays of air, water, or scents hitting viewers. Responses to these screenings are often pretty mixed. What would The Boys' finale smell like in 4DX? We're guessing blood and ozone. We'll find out on May 19.
