This year’s Day of the Devs: The Game Awards digital showcase featured a slew of premieres, release date announcements, and trailers for unique indie games. Day of the Devs is a long-standing collaboration between iam8bit and Double Fine that has played a big part in platforming independent games at no cost to developers, in the past shining a spotlight on titles like Hollow Knight and Untitled Goose Game that would go on to become massive hits.

Last year, Day of the Devs became a fully independent nonprofit organization, and as such is now accepting donations to continue its journey of supporting small developers at no cost. For those that wish to support the nonprofit’s mission, donations can be made on the Day of the Devs website. If you missed the showcase, or just want a recap of all the amazing games shown off during the presentation, this is everything featured in the Day of the Devs: The Game Awards Edition.

We can definitely expect a few big reveals, including the long-awaited new Tomb Raider game, plus new details and gameplay from Resident Evil Requiem, Lego Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight, Saros, and Phantom Blade Zero. Rumored to appear are a new Divinity game from Baldur's Gate 3 studio Larian, the next Diablo 4 expansion, a new Total War game, and an update on the long-in-development Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Some people are even holding out hope that it's finally time for Valve to reveal Half-Life 3. We'll see about that!

The top prize of the night is, of course, Game of the Year — and there are clear indicators of what makes a Game of the Year at The Game Awards, based on eleven years of data. We used these metrics to correctly predict last year’s winner, Astro Bot. We also used them to correctly call all six nominees for Game of the Year, which were announced alongside all the other categories on Nov. 17. Below, we pick the likely winner and rank the rest of the six nominees in order of their likeliness to win. The latter part is somewhat arbitrary, as this year there is a very, very clear favorite. We’ll find out whether there will be a shock upset at The Game Awards on Dec. 11.

Update (Dec. 9): In our final update before the awards ceremony, we predict the winners of the genre categories: Best Action Game, Action/Adventure Game, Role-Playing Game, Fighting Game, Family Game, Sim/Strategy Game, Sports/Racing Game, and VR/AR Game. At least these can't all go to Clair Obscur! We'll also call the winner of the Players' Voice vote. Check out our predictions below the ranked list of GOTY nominees. We can also now finalize our predicted tallies for award winners:

Inside the multimillion dollar business of predicting Game of the Year

Instead, wagering on Game of the Year has taken off on online prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket. These are, legally speaking, not gambling at all. They are peer-to-peer financial markets where users trade yes/no “contracts” on the outcome of real-world events. As such, there is no “house” setting odds that users are betting against. The market just takes a cut of the transactions, and the prices and payouts are set by the trading, as with a real financial market. If a lot of people are buying, the price goes up; if they’re selling, it goes down. They’re a bit like futures markets, only they’re about predicting events, not the price of goods.

You can buy a contract on Clair Obscur winning Game of the Year at 92 cents; if it wins, you’ll get back one dollar. If you prefer an outside bet, you can spend 2 cents on a contract for a Donkey Kong Bananza win, with the same one-dollar payout. More risk, more reward. It’s not gambling — but it also absolutely is. (Kalshi has made headlines because its status as a financial market essentially circumvents U.S. states’ bans on sports betting, although that status is now threatened by a recent judicial ruling that Kalshi is subject to gambling regulation in Nevada.)

The Game Awards announced its nominees for Game of the Year 2025 during a livestream on Monday, and while there were some expected picks, it was certainly a big, big year for indies. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hades 2, and Hollow Knight: Silksong are all up for Game of the Year.

Those three are joined by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. The six GOTY nominees line up with our own predictions for this year's frontrunners. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the most-recognized game this year, with 12 nominations across 10 categories. Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yōtei were both nominated for seven awards each.
