It reveals echoes of the past, you must uncover the truth behind this grisly mystery. On Sunday the 7th of March, 1936, a group of locals made their way up the long, muddy track to Galley House. As far as any of them knew, the house had stood empty for decades. Inside, they discovered the bloody aftermath of something horrific. The authorities were summoned, and the crime scene was eventually cleared away. But nobody ever figured out what happened that dreadful night. It seemed likely that no one ever would. Now, many years later, you have access to a peculiar machine — one that lets you listen in on echoes of the past.

The gameplay loop of The Incident at Galley House revolves around using a machine to enter scenes from the past, listen in on conversations, and figure out who everyone is, where they went next, how they died, and so on. The main puzzle is discovering every scene and working out how everyone moved between them. In that regard, the game is definitely an “Obra Dinn”-style deduction game, but its focus is more on tracking everyone’s movements to determine where they went next. Identifying characters isn’t especially difficult since their conversations provide plenty of context.

The Incident at Galley House never seems to verify that information, so it mostly serves as a personal reference. Everything appeared to be mapped correctly by the end. All achievements were unlocked, the credits rolled, and the post-credits scene played, so that seems to be the game’s ending. Rather than confirming every name, portrait, and detail is correct, the story simply concludes once every scene has been found. There were a few moments of getting stuck, but careful attention usually revealed at least one more scene to investigate. There are plenty of subtle hints about where characters are headed next, who they will interact with, and other details.

When that wasn’t enough, there were often only one or two people left to account for, making it possible to search earlier scenes for references or simply brute-force the remaining locations. For example, when only one person remained for a particular time slot, checking every room eventually revealed the correct scene. There may well be enough clues to deduce every location without guessing, but some were easy to overlook. Overall, The Incident at Galley House is interesting, but significantly easier than Obra Dinn—assuming the “three correct answers” mechanic in Obra Dinn isn’t heavily relied upon, since that system makes it considerably easier.
