Sony has given a positive update regarding the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie, giving fans hope that it will hit its 2027 release date and won't be delayed.

The idea of a Legend of Zelda movie has long been a dream for fans, but Nintendo has never seemed interested in making one. That all changed in 2023, when a live-action film based on the franchise was announced, being a co-production between Columbia Pictures, Arad Productions, OddBall Entertainment, and Nintendo itself. As Columbia is owned by Sony, this means Nintendo is in bed with one of its biggest rivals for The Legend of Zelda flick.

All that has been revealed about The Legend of Zelda movie is a few set photos showing the live-action versions of Link and Princess Zelda. It seems the film is further along than people realized, as Sony Pictures announced at CinemaCon 2026 (via IGN on Twitter/X) that The Legend of Zelda movie has wrapped filming.

Now, just because filming has wrapped doesn't mean the movie is done. It still needs to be edited, and, more importantly, any special effects work will need to be completed. Chances are, the Legend of Zelda film will have lots of CGI effects, which take time to create.

If The Legend of Zelda movie is a hit, then it could lead to more live-action adaptations down the line, though fans shouldn't get their hopes up for a Super Smash Bros. movie anytime soon, not with the Nintendo franchise film rights being spread around.
