The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could be arriving on streaming services just a month after it hit theaters. That’s according to a recent listing on When to Stream (via Forbes), which has the animated blockbuster coming to Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and other platforms on May 5.
If accurate, that would be just over a month since the movie’s April 1 debut in theaters. The previous entry, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, took several months before it first came to Peacock in 2023. It would be a surprising move considering Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment’s big-screen adaptation feels like one of the few franchise events that can still reliably get butts in seats, especially as parents take their kids to multiple showings.
Perhaps the companies simply aren’t that worried as Mario Galaxy coasts past an $800 million global box office haul. I will say that despite the savage reception among critics, the digital version of Mario Galaxy will be another instant buy in my house since it’s one of the few movies all of my kids will happily rewatch, and while not doing psychic damage to my brain as the Minecraft movie did.
I’m also secretly hopeful it will encourage them to pick up the Mario Galaxy collection for Switch I bought them for Christmas that they promptly gave up on.
