Stardew Valley has some pretty great moments that don't even have to happen within cutscenes. These can be milestones like when your farm finally starts consistently earning a lot of money, but many of them aren't milestones at all and happen when you least expect them.

12 Best Cozy Games with Lots of Collectibles

Cozy games are great, but cozy games with endless things to collect? Even better. From feathers to fish, these are the ultimate collection-heavy games

These moments can be as small as catching a fish you've been chasing for months, beating the clock, or simply seeing the start of a new year. They're the small, random moments that truly define Stardew Valley and offer a sense of accomplishment. These are the moments that keep players coming back years after their first playthrough.

10 The Change of Season

The Sun Will Shine Again

The change of season brings some much-needed variety and helps track the passing of time in Stardew Valley. Winter is particularly rough as plants grow slower and you can't plant crops without a greenhouse.

It can feel like Winter lasts forever, but it eventually ends and Spring arrives. The arrival of Spring brings with it a new year. Waking up to find new grass and foliage is actually magical, and is one of the moments that stick with me for a long time. It has all the feelings of a brand-new year in real life, which takes place in Summer where I am, but that feeling of new beginnings remains.

9 Unlocking the Greenhouse

Embrace the Freedom of the Greenhouse

Greenhouses are essential for growing crops year-round, but they are not available at the start of the game. Unlocking one requires either purchasing the upgrade through JojaMart or completing the Greenhouse bundles in the Community Center. The Community Center upgrade in particular requires a lot of planning, and unlocking the greenhouse before Winter is a moment that changes how your farm works.

I managed to unlock greenhouses just one day before Winter. I had already stockpiled seeds that I could plant out of season, and Winter ended up becoming one of my most lucrative seasons for that harvest rather than the worst. Beating the clock and achieving that goal right on time is a feeling many players come back for over and over again.

8 Catching a Legendary Fish

It Can be Just Out of Reach

Stardew Valley Forest

Fishing is an entire separate mini-game in Stardew Valley. Just catching a fish can feel like a massive achievement when you first get started, but as you progress through the fishing skill, you can customize your rod to make it easier.

Stardew Valley has an endless number of challenging runs you can gun for, and these are some of the best.

Getting perfection requires catching all the fish in Stardew Valley. Legendary fish are the most tricky of all the fish to catch, and finally doing it is a moment that most players remember. Chasing that high of finally getting something so elusive is great, but it also just keeps going when other characters comment on your achievement in the days after.

7 The Moonlight Jellyfish Festival

A Spectacle of Art and Nature

Stardew Valley has many festivals, but the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies festival stands out as one of Stardew Valley's best moments. I remember my very first Moonlight Jellyfish festival. I had no idea what to expect, did the usual chatting to characters and buying specialty goods, then made my way to the docks.

The moment the candle boat went out and the jellyfish arrived took my breath away. Vanilla Stardew Valley does something amazing with its lighting, where the darkness is almost too dark, but it makes the small patches of light all the more stunning. The darkness of a summer's night is broken by fireflies flying in the dark, and quietly watching the gentle blue glow of the jellyfish in the ocean alongside the townsfolk of Pelican Town was genuinely a moment I'll never forget.

6 (Your Pet) Loves You!

Love with No Reward

Getting a dog or a cat in Stardew Valley doesn't necessarily add much at a productivity level, but they don't have to. At high heart levels, they will sometimes give you gifts, but they're mostly there to look cute. But they're still a good reminder that not everything needs to be productive.

I would interact with my cat every day and stopped keeping track of their heart levels. Until one day, I interacted with her and a little message popped up. "Cinnabon loves you!" It was so unexpected and endearing, and I've seen many other players in the community comment on how much they loved this moment.

Dance with the Junimos

There are certain moments of magic in Stardew Valley, some of which are literal. The Community Center's restoration is facilitated by the Junimos, tiny forest spirits who live in the center.

Fixing the Community Center isn't really about getting the rewards from it, which you can get from the Joja Mart run. I began working on the Community Center out of a spirit of community, but was convinced to stick to this path because of the little cutscene that plays once you complete a bundle. The little Junimos dance with joy, and their happiness is contagious. While the Joja Mart route is easier to do, it doesn't have the same heart and warmth that comes with helping out the Junimos.

4 Getting Your First Prismatic Shard

RNG Please be Kind

Getting certain rare items in Stardew Valley requires a lot of grinding and depending on the RNG gods to grant what you need. Prismatic shards are one of the worst things to look for because they're one of the rarest items in Stardew Valley, and because you need them to progress in the Skull Cavern.

Getting a Prismatic Shard means you can forge a Galaxy Sword, one of the most coveted items in Stardew Valley, so finally finding a Prismatic Shard is a memorable moment for any player. There was a lot of excited yelling at my screen when I finally found one after hours of grinding.

Do NOT donate the first Prismatic Shard you find to the museum. The museum can wait.

3 Getting a Roommate

Marriage or a Platonic Void Bestie

Marriage is one of the defining features of Stardew Valley, and having one of your favorite villagers move in is a moment that many players remember. Waking up that first day with your spouse right there is a memorable thing.

However, you don't have to get married to have a roommate. Krobus is an example of a close friendship, and you can have him move into your home as a roommate. He behaves almost the same as the spouses, gives you gifts, and even takes care of any children. Having a close relationship with someone and having them live right there with you is a moment that many players love, and discovering each character as a different spouse is one reason players keep coming back.

2 Having Children

Life Goes On

stardew-valley-children

Getting married in Stardew Valley is a big event that makes it possible to have two children and can either have biological children or adopt. Honestly, children don't do much, but having them for the first time with your spouse of choice is a moment that marks a change in many playthroughs.

The child sprites are also incredibly cute, and growing your family with your spouse is a special option that many games don't offer. Seeing your spouse at festivals with your child is a wonderful moment that is an indicator of all the time that has passed since you first arrived alone in Stardew Valley.

1 Starting Over

Just One More Playthrough

Stardew Valley Grass

There comes a point in every Stardew Valley player's life where they think less about the future of their current build and start imagining what they could do if they started over. Eventually, the thought becomes all-consuming, and you hit the New button on the main menu to start the process all over again.

Starting over is like the dawn of a new age. There's so much potential for new beginnings and a different way of life. Running into old friends who are now strangers all over again is nostalgic, and gives you space to imagine the journey you're about to embark on with them again.
