Soon you can no longer trust what you see and what you hear. The Mound is an intense and horrifying co-op adventure that nails a lot of things, including the atmosphere, sound design, world-building, and brutal combat, while still needing improvement in a few areas. Many of the complaints seem to stem from misunderstanding The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu. It’s a Lovecraftian survival horror experience designed to make players feel helpless and anxious. The intended approach is to play stealthily, pick battles carefully, and deal with the timer that ramps up the difficulty, since progression comes through unlocks and contracts rather than endless fighting or extraction-shooter style loot.

Despite its technical shortcomings, such as optimization, there’s a really fun and intense co-op horror game here. The complaints in other reviews about the movement (no jumping and similar criticisms) don’t really hold up. It actually fits the survival horror style perfectly, with movement reminiscent of Resident Evil 7. This isn’t Darktide or Left 4 Dead 2, and it doesn’t try to be. Instead, it’s carving out its own spin on the formula. There’s definitely room for improvement, and the developers have already mentioned they’re working on a blocking/parrying system.

Even with what’s currently available, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu feels genuinely scary and intense. To the developers: don’t completely give in to what everyone wants and water down your vision. It’s never easy being innovative, and complaints are part of the process when trying something different. The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is all about cooperation and slow-paced, tactical progression. Go slow, don’t rush. Creating noise—even running in armor or through bushes—wakes up the forest, and players won’t get far that way. Players are not meant to fight enemies one-on-one.
