Baldur's Gate 3 isn't exact with how it uses Dungeons and Dragons lore in-game, but that's partially due to how BG3 had to make adjustments for the sake of using a DnD setting in a video game, which is naturally going to be different from running a standard tabletop campaign.

However, the characters included in Baldur's Gate 3 have sparked some debates about the lore in BG3 compared to DnD, and how some elements might be different or at least represented differently. Although it doesn't impact the gameplay of BG3, there are a lot of questions about the Nightsong, or Dame Aylin, and her being an Aasimar.

Defining an Aasimar in Dungeons and Dragons

In Dungeons and Dragons, the Aasimar are descendants of celestials. By that definition alone, Aylin would fall into the category of being an Aasimar. Selûne is a celestial being as one of the primordial goddesses. If Aylin was the daughter of Selûne, then she'd have strong celestial blood in her veins, and that makes her an Aasimar. The question is if Aylin is only an Aasimar or something beyond that.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a massive game with endless replayability. But how can you make each playthrough feel unique?

The debate around what an Aasimar is becomes unclear in Aylin's case if you look at the traditional definition that states Aasimar are mortal-based creatures. The argument is then that Aylin isn't an Aasimar because she's not a mortal who was touched by the celestials. She was born from a celestial mother, likely while Selûne was possessing a mortal body, which tends to be the case when the gods of the Forgotten Realms decide to have children.

Dame Aylin Falls More Into the Category of a Demigod

While Aylin is technically an Aasimar, her direct connection to Selûne makes her more of a demigod. Part of this is because we don't know the circumstances of Aylin's birth, but you can tell that she's more powerful than a typical Aasimar. It's also possible that Selûne blessed Aylin with more power than a typical Aasimar, as you know that she was basically an envoy for Selûne.

The problem is that we simply don't know enough about Aylin's past and birth to say that she's a demigod or just a strong Aasimar with more potent celestial blood. She could see Selûne as her mother in the sense that she's the source of her Aasimar blood and powers, or Selûne could literally be Aylin's mother. Given the way Aylin talks and how forthcoming she is in general, I would assume that she's telling the truth about her mother's identity, as she has no reason to lie about it or make it figurative instead of literal.

The semantics don't change the story or Aylin's role in it, but it's interesting that it's been turned into a debate. The lines between what counts as an Aasimar and what counts as a demigod aren't well-defined, and it's not unheard of for gods to have children, such as Mystra giving birth to the Seven Sisters. It might not be a distinction that has much impact on campaigns in DnD or in the world of Baldur's Gate 3, but it's interesting to think about in terms of the universe's lore in general.
