Eric Warner is a Journalist and Multimedia Producer based in New England with over seven years of experience producing stories for multiple print, online, radio, and video publications.

Eric has been a gaming fan ever since getting an original Xbox for Christmas in the early 2000's. From then on, he has become enthralled in the gaming world, spending thousands of hours in Halo multiplayer matches, climbing dozens of towers across the Assassin's Creed games, and 100% perfecting every single Horizon game to date.

When not writing for DualShockers Eric can typically be found playing games on his PS5, PC, and Xbox or reading sci-fi, horror, and fantasy books/comics.

The original trilogy of mainline Resident Evil games defined the modern survival horror genre of video games on the PlayStation 1, and while most of them were ported to other platforms over the years, they haven't been easily available on PC.

Now, just a few weeks after Resident Evil's 30th anniversary, Capcom has finally rereleased 1996's Resident Evil, 1998's Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, alongside the classic PS1 RPG Breath of Fire IV on Steam.

To top it off, all four games are currently being sold at 50% off ($4.99 per title) as part of Steam's Capcom Spring Sale, which will run until Wednesday, April 15th.

Besides the original RE trilogy, Steam players can also purchase the Resident Evil 3 remake for $3.99 and the Resident Evil 4 remake for $15.99 as part of the Capcom Spring Sale.

Steam's Return to the Original Raccoon City

These Steam versions of the original Resident Evil trilogy aren't exactly new, as they're essentially ports of the PC versions already available on GOG.com.

However, the Steam versions of the RE trilogy come with Enigma Protector DRM, a highly controversial feature that can slow game performance and has notably been seen in the Steam versions of Capcom's original Dino Crisis games.

In terms of system requirements, all three games require:

  • A Windows 11 Operating System
  • An Intel Core i5 8500 or Ryzen 3 3100 or better processor
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 4 GB of Storage
  • DirectX Version 12
  • An NVIDIA GTX 1660 or similar GPU

All three games have partial controller support with most modern Xbox controllers, as well as DualShock and DualSense controllers, though the latter PlayStation controllers are only compatible with USB.

Additionally, all three games will work on Steam Deck handhelds, but they may require players to create custom input layouts in order for all gameplay mechanics to function properly without frustration, especially when using thumbsticks instead of the D-pad.

With this Steam debut, most of the mainline Resident Evil games are now available on Steam, save for Resident Evil - Code: Veronica, though the Claire Redfield-led game has long been rumored to be the subject of the next RE remake.
