Supergirl was a box office bomb, earning just $116 million since its June 24 release against its reported $290 million production and marketing budget. This has renewed talk about “superhero fatigue” and led to plenty of speculation about the future of the DC Universe, but a big streaming success might show the way forward for both Supergirl and the DC Universe.

My Adventures with Superman ranked among the top 10 shows on HBO Max this week, both in the U.S. and worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. The Adult Swim series first launched in 2023, reimagining Superman’s early exploits through an anime lens. Superman (Jack Quaid) battles surprising versions of classic villains including Parasite (Jake Green), Brainiac (Michael Emerson), and Deathstroke (Chris Parnell) with the help of Lois Lane (Alice Lee) and Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid).

Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El (Kiana Madeira) first appeared in season 2 as a brainwashed servant of Brainiac, who was trying to rebuild the Kryptonian Empire by conquering other planets. Brainiac was defeated at the end of season 2, and Kara joined the main cast in season 3, donning the mantle of Supergirl to protect Metropolis from new threats.

Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl film is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is a brooding tale of vengeance and the tragedy of Krypton’s destruction. While My Adventures with Superman’s Supergirl sometimes doubts herself – worrying that her friends won’t forgive her for her past wrongdoings or that she doesn’t fit in on Earth – she is mostly an exuberant optimist who ferociously fights for her adopted world and the people she loves.

Will there be more My Adventures with Superman?

My Adventures with Superman season 3 is currently airing, with the season finale premiering at midnight Aug. 15. A fourth season of the series has not been confirmed, but it is getting a spinoff. My Adventures with Green Lantern will focus on Jessica Cruz (Auliʻi Cravalho), a Coast City high school student who has to confront her own fears to fight alien villains.

DC Universe’s Supergirl (Milly Alcock) will return in James Gunn’s Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. She’ll be joining the Man of Steel (David Corenswet), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), the Green Lantern John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and others to fight Brainiac.
