If you were wondering why CD Projekt is releasing a new expansion for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt over a decade after its initial release, here’s the most straightforward answer: The game has officially surpassed 65 million units in lifetime sales. For context, that makes it the eighth highest-selling video game of all time, just behind Terraria and ahead of the original Super Mario. Bros. The Witcher 3 still has a long way to go to catch Tetris' near-unbeatable 520 million lifetime sales, though.
CD Projekt announced the news as part of its latest earnings report. The company also highlighted to investors that the Cyberpunk Trading Card Game has earned $28 million on Kickstarter, which apparently makes it the most funded game and the third most funded project in general in the platform’s history.
As for Song of the Past, the new DLC for The Witcher 3, the company gave a few more morsels of info during the Q&A section of an anniversary livestream. For starters, the team hinted at the add-on’s length. “Songs of the Past will be aligned with what you’re familiar with from Blood and Wine,” said social media manager Laura Beitzel. According to HowLongToBeat, The Witcher 3’s second major expansion, Blood and Wine, takes players around 28 hours to beat on average, making it as long or longer than many complete games.
Perhaps the biggest bombshell for all the card sharks out there is that, like with the previous expansions, Songs of the Past will feature more Gwent. Considering that CD Projekt ended official support of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game in 2023, the addition of new cards is quite exciting.
CD Projekt Red currently has a lot in the oven. Not only is it co-developing Songs of the Past with Fool’s Theory, but it has also been working on the highly anticipated The Witcher 4, which will star Geralt’s apprentice Ciri. Additionally, the studio is also currently working on a seemingly expansive remake of the original Witcher game and an untitled sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. None of these projects currently have a concrete release year besides Song of the Past, so it seems safe to assume a reunion with Geralt will be the next thing to expect from the studio.
