It's been a couple of years since Epic Games released the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, but aside from Steal a Brainrot, the tech hasn't allowed any fan creations to break through into public consciousness. That might be about to change, judging from the reception to Animora. A short trailer for the fan-made fantasy experience is racking up millions upon millions of views, with many people in utter disbelief that the game was actually created in Fortnite.

Instead, Animora looks like a cross between World of Warcraft and Genshin Impact. There's no telling whether the final product will be anywhere near as good as either of those titles, but the mere fact that anyone can make a comparison to such popular games is by itself noteworthy. Epic Games is currently hyping the map up by saying it is "built different." Even Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO, appears to be impressed by Animora.

"They're making mmos in Fortnite wtf," one viral post on X with 2.6M views reads. That's one of many posts with an incredible number of impressions; the trailer by itself has garnered 5.6M clicks on its own. While many of the reactions to Animora are the digital equivalent of an agape mouth, many responses are confused by how reminiscent Animora is of Hoyoverse's popular RPG, Genshin Impact. Some are even making side-by-side comparison videos of both games, which has led to rampant speculation about a potential lawsuit.

But creator Augartistt has been upfront about the map's influences and their usage of an asset pack to achieve Animora's look. The purchased artwork is marketed as a 'stylized medieval village,' and it appears to be made from scratch. While the map screams Mondstadt, Genshin Impact's starting area, Augartistt insists that they are building a unique experience with its own progression system, loot, companions, and co-op functionality. In one trailer showing off some of Animora's biomes, the developer also mentions that some mechanics will be card-based.

Amid the concerns regarding the similarities to Genshin Impact, it's worth noting that the most popular Fortnite map currently is a direct copy of the biggest Roblox game. And Genshin Impact's initial reveal was also marred with criticisms about its supposed replication of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Animora is set to release sometime in January — but given that there are only a few days left in the month, and the immense attention the fan creation has suddenly amassed, I wouldn't be shocked if the plan or scope for the game are about to change.
