In the gaming industry, timing is pretty much everything. And when a titan like Grand Theft Auto 6 looms on the horizon, the entire release calendar undergoes a collective, panicked shift.
We’ve seen it happen time and time again, and it is happening right now as we speak: major publishers scrambling to move their anticipated projects to “safer” windows like September or early October, desperate to avoid getting completely crushed by Rockstar’s unstoppable hype machine.
To be honest, it indeed is a smart, logical survival tactic because, let’s be real, nobody wants to launch their passion project in the shadow of a game that will easily dominate the global cultural conversation for months. However, apparently, nobody told the folks over at Junkfish – or maybe they are simply brave enough to go toe-to-toe with GTA 6 anyway.
An “I Am No Man” Moment

While the rest of the industry is actively running for cover, this indie studio is doing the unthinkable. Instead of fleeing to the crowded safe haven of late summer, they are marching straight into the danger zone! That’s right: their promising new title, Wilderdark, has officially locked in a November 3rd release date, bravely standing its ground right in the middle of the year's most dangerous launch window.
By the way, if the developer's name sounds familiar, it’s because Junkfish is the brilliant creative force behind the highly acclaimed indie hit Monstrum. After mastering the art of keeping players terrified on haunted, procedurally generated cargo ships, the team is returning to the world of first-person survival horror, but this time, they are trading supernatural monsters for a threat that feels much more primal and ancient: dinosaurs.
Their promising new title, Wilderdark, has officially locked in a November 3rd release date, bravely standing its ground right in the middle of the year's most dangerous launch window.
But don't go expecting a mindless, action-heavy shooter where you easily mow down raptors with an assault rifle. According to the press release, Wilderdark is a pure survival horror experience at its core, and to stay alive in this hostile world, you will need to analyze every single inch of the environment to avoid becoming dinner, while also searching for new discoveries and objects of interest to unravel the mysteries of the place.
This translates to a gameplay loop that demands a constant, highly stressful balancing act – and trust me, I’m dead serious when I say this, because I had the opportunity to play the game a few months back and felt like I was back in my teenage years facing terrifying digital dinosaurs. In my preview of the game, I even wrote that Wilderdark is “a unique blend that sits somewhere between the cosmic curiosity of Outer Wilds and the relentless dread of Dino Crisis, carving out its own identity in a genre that has been craving something this fresh (and scaly) for years.”
It is a wildly ambitious concept, and honestly, seeing an indie developer pull it off with such style is incredibly exciting – even more so in this case, when the developers also truly believe that what they are building is strong enough to launch in a month that is so feared by many other studios (including the triple-A giants of the industry).
So, I don't know about you, but I have immense respect for any indie team brave enough to look the GTA 6 giant right in the eye and say, "We are launching in November anyway." I am definitely going to give this baby's full version a try!
