This single-player nightmare is all about getting in your head, but it's a little crowded in there
Image: Historia/Shueisha GamesThe Day of the Devs pre-Game Awards digital showcase provided a glimpse at some interesting-looking upcoming games, but there's one I just cannot get out of my head: UN:Me, a psychological thriller by Historia and Shueisha Games that looks like a blend of Silent Hill f and Among Us.
At this point, lots of games have taken the Among Us formula and tweaked it to create something new (see: Eyes of Hellfire), but UN:Me stands out from the crowd in part because it's a single-player game, and the player-character is both the impostor and not-the-impostor.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," producer Yasukazu Kawai says.
UN:Me sees players step into the shoes of an unnamed female protagonist, who appears to be high school-aged, based on her uniform. Within her are four different souls, with different anxieties and motivations. These souls can take control of her at will, unleashing their fears and phobias on her without warning. Based on gameplay clips from the Day of the Devs showcase, much of UN:Me appears to take place in a hospital, though other clips show the protagonist exploring a church.
UN:Me definitely shares some visual similarities with Silent Hill f, but there are no lead pipes to help you defend yourself from the voices in your head.Image: Historia/Shueisha Games"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" game director Shun Sasaki asks during UN:Me's gameplay showcase. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person. Four souls reside within the girl. You control whichever soul surfaces at any given moment, but they'll switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears and anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the fear you experience as a player."
At first glance, UN:Me seems to share a lot of similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is packed with nurses who all share the same face, with smiles that are just a little too wide and necks that are just a little too long. The waiting room is full of patients who have enormous flowers growing where their heads should be. Like Silent Hill f, flowers are everywhere in UN:Me, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror. The game's nameless player-character even looks a bit like Silent Hill f protagonist Hinako Shimizu. But UN:Me is anything but a Silent Hill rip-off, especially since it forces players to decide which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is "real." If a player determines that a specific soul is not their own, they must kill it.
Each soul is different — some are scared, some are angry, some are indifferent. But only one is real.Image: Historia/Shueisha Games"Each of the four souls claims that the body belongs to them," Historia representative Takuya Yamanaka explains in the trailer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced that a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it's very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," Yamanaka says. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
No pressure!
UN:Me's release date has not yet been announced, but it's currently available to wishlist on Steam.
