Three More SEGA Classics Make Their Return In The West

Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

Probably one of the biggest selling points in the gaming industry today is not a luxury collector's edition, cutting-edge graphics, or 1,000+ hours of gameplay, but rather pure and simple nostalgia.

In an era dominated by massive open worlds and live-service models, there is a growing sanctuary for titles that remind us of the 16-bit era's golden days. It seems that one of the companies that best understands this (and perfectly uses it to its advantage) is SEGA, which remains steadfast in its mission to make more of its classic titles available on modern platforms.

This week has become particularly special for SEGA fans, as Mighty Rabbit Studios, Headless Chicken Games, and Limited Run Games teamed up this Friday to re-release three cult classic SEGA CD and Genesis games in the West – titles that had already been made available in Japan just last month.

The Earnest Evans Collection Brings the Wolf Team Legacy to Modern Platforms

Officially titled the Earnest Evans Collection, this bundle features a pretty powerful trio, composed of Earnest Evans, El Viento, and Annet Returns.

These titles were originally developed by the renowned team at Wolf Team, the creators who would later go on to develop the iconic Tales of RPG series. Over time, these three games have become true cult classics of the 1990s, holding a special place in the hearts of retro gamers.

These three are Castlevania-style side-scrollers that follow the intertwined stories of protagonists Earnest Evans and Annet Myer. The plot is a wild, adventurous ride, involving everything from thwarting the plans of Al Capone to stopping the resurrection of the Dark Lord Hastur (yes, you did not read wrong!), while also protecting the world from Siegfried Munchausen and the evil NeXesis Party. It is a pure nostalgic adventure that is finally no longer locked in the past.

Games from SEGA's back catalog like Comix Zone and Nights into Dreams deserve to return to the gaming scene with remakes.

The best part of this news is that this revival is already available for multiple modern platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam). Naturally, these versions come equipped with brand-new quality-of-life features to suit modern gaming in order to attract both old and new players.

I believe that, for many players, the biggest addition is the rewind functionality, meaning you can literally roll back any mistakes (a more than welcome feature since we all know unforgiving retro games can be, right?) along with the ability to save your progress anywhere you like, ensuring that you can enjoy these challenging levels at your own pace.

Oh, and the collection also includes both the CD and cartridge versions of Earnest Evans (each featuring different storylines), a soundtrack by the acclaimed composer Motoi Sakuraba (from Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, and more), and fully voiced cutscenes in Earnest Evans and Annet Returns produced by the legendary anime studio Madhouse (mainly known for Trigun and Cardcaptor Sakura).

You can check out the latest trailer below to get a feel for the collection, which sits somewhere between a port and a remaster, designed to warm the hearts of retro gaming lovers:

While these titles from the Earnest Evans Collection had already been made available to the Japanese public just last month, Western fans have been eagerly waiting for a localized way to experience these gems without relying on expensive imports or aging hardware (which are often more expensive than current platforms).

So I feel that this is a nice way to start 2026 with a nostalgic package that will make many players (including me) reminisce about childhood memories and, of course, fall even more in love with video games!
