Todd Howard Confirms Fallout 5 Will Be Affected By The Show's Events

Jake brings two decades of experience with him, having covered major industry events, breaking news, one-on-one interviews, and more.

When he's not playing World of Warcraft, he's usually on the hunt for good food and a refreshing beer to wash it down.

Following a successful first season, Fallout made its long-awaited return to Prime Video this week. Good news: it's a pretty good start to the season!

I was fortunate to get access to the first six episodes of Season Two, and I'm happy to report that Fallout continues to be an absolute blast, capturing the magic of the iconic video game franchise.

Fallout Season 2's premiere, "The Innovator," builds off Season 1's strong finish.

Thanks to the show’s success and mainstream reach, it's brought renewed interest in the iconic gaming franchise. With that renewed interest comes a popular question: when are we getting a new Fallout game?

Technically, there’s a Fallout game that is still seeing routine updates in Fallout 76. However, it’s widely viewed as a non-traditional Fallout game and a spin-off, one that had a poor reception at launch to boot. Over time, Bethesda has done well to turn things around, but it’s not exactly the same experience as the more “traditional” entries in the series, such as Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4, the latter of which released a decade ago.

Fallout 5 Is Confirmed To Exist In A World Where The Events Of The Show Have Either Happened Or Are Currently Happening

As a result, we’ve gone from asking Bethesda about the next Elder Scrolls game, which is currently in development and Bethesda’s main focus, straight to “When are we getting Fallout 5?”

In a surprise to no one, Howard confirmed to PC Gamer that the show, which is indeed canon to the Fallout universe, will have an impact on Fallout 5.

Fallout 5 will be existing in a world where the stories and events of the show happened or are happening. We are taking that into account.

Now, this doesn’t mean that Fallout 5 will take place in the same exact location as the show, which is set in Southern California and New Vegas. It does indicate, however, that the events and their aftermath of the show will play a role in the world we play through in Fallout 5.

I'm not sure we'll get a chance to, say, explore Vault 33 and hang out with Lucy and The Ghoul. It does, however, mean that their story, as well as Maximus’ and the Brotherhood of Steel, should have an impact on the world and story of Fallout 5.

Whenever the next Fallout game sees the light of day, however, is an entirely separate question, and I'm sure it's one Todd Howard doesn't have an answer for.
