Two New Cuphead Games Are On The Way, And One’s An 8-Bit Platform Shooter

Studio MDHR brought puppets to Summer Game Fest this time, alongside the news that it’s making not one, but two brand new Cuphead games…and one’s not what you’d expect.

The first to be announced, with no title or release window to be had, is just “a new, hand-animated Cuphead.” That’s it. We didn’t see anything of it or learn anything more, it’s just going to be another game like Cuphead. Neat! Just, non-specific. It sounds like development may have only started recently, so we might have to wait a while to hear more.

The second game is entitled Mighty Cuphead Adventure, and it’s an 8-bit platform shooter that looks to be treading some of the same ground as the original Cuphead, with some familiar-looking bosses and both Cuphead and Mugman starring. According to a press release, Mighty Cuphead Adventure was actually developed with ’80s technology as a tribute to the games of the era, programmed in classic Assembly Language and designed within the specifications of the Sega Master System. Though it’s coming to modern consoles and PC, there will also be a physical Sega Master System cartridge available for anyone who’s still got one of those consoles lying around. No release window for this one either, though PR says to expect more news in the months to come.

We’ve been wondering what Studio MDHR has been up to since it wrapped up Cuphead, which first came out in 2017 and has since gotten multiple ports and a big DLC expansion entitled The Delicious Last Course, which dropped in 2022. All were very well-received and praised for the hand-drawn animation and commitment to a classic ’30s art style and sound. The game got a TV show, The Cuphead Show!, also in 2022, which was fine.
