Ubisoft Cancels Long-Delayed Prince Of Persia Remake

6 days ago 2

Ubisoft has announced that it is canceling its Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. It is also canceling development on five other games and delaying seven more titles as part of a larger restructuring.

On January 21, Ubisoft announced its plans to restructure the company as part of its $1.25 billion Tencent deal that sees parts of the publisher separated and regrouped into new studios focused on specific brands and IP. As part of this massive shakeup of the French publisher, six in-development games have been canceled, including the oft-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, which was first announced in 2020. It has also delayed seven games, with one of those titles believed to be the previously reported Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake.

The Prince of Persia remake was first revealed in September 2020. It was set to launch in 2021 and was being developed by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. However, in December 2020, the game was delayed until March 2021. In February 2021, it was delayed again with no new release date given. Then, in May 2022, Ubisoft announced that Ubisoft Montréal—the studio behind the original Sands of Time—was taking over the project. And it was then revealed that development on the remake was essentially starting over. At Summer Game Fest 2024, Ubisoft re-announced the Sands of Time remake with a tiny teaser and a new 2026 release date. In June 2025, Ubisoft reconfirmed it was working on the remake. Now, about six months later, it has been officially been canned after a protracted development hell.

This is a sad, but not surprising, end for a project that seemed doomed to restart development over and over again, which is ironic but also not a great way to make a video game.

Ubisoft delays reported Black Flag remake and more

“Ubisoft has conducted a thorough review of its content pipeline over December and January. This has led to the strategic decision to refocus its portfolio, reallocate resources, and comprehensively revise its roadmap over the next three years,” explained Ubisoft in a press release published Wednesday.

Ubisoft says the canceled projects did not meet the company’s “new enhanced quality” levels. The canned games include the Prince of Persia remake, three new IPs, and a mobile game. Ubisoft is also allocating more time to seven games in order to “ensure enhanced quality benchmarks are fully met.” One of these delayed games was scheduled for launch in fiscal year 2026 and is now launching in fiscal year 2027. This is believed to be the Black Flag remake.
