Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster are about to square off in fight to the death — no Dark Universe required.

Universal Pictures and Experiences is collaborating with global toy and entertainment company Spin Master on a new trading card game that pits horror icons against each other in fights to the death. On Feb. 3, Spin Master announced Hellbreak, a TCG co-designed with the team at Ghost Galaxy, the tabletop game studio best known for KeyForge.

"The gameplay revolves around the idea of a 'Monster Sandbox,' an arena in which fan-favorite characters in horror history fight to the bitter end," reads an official release. "Forged from the legacy of Universal Monsters where cinematic horror began, the initial card set will feature a stunning array of Universal Pictures’ characters that encompasses genre-defining classics, icons of horror’s late 20th century resurgence and visionaries who continue to shape fear for modern audiences." So it's safe to say we'll see Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, The Mummy, and more Universal classics represented. Could this be the real Dark Universe reboot we've been waiting for?

Spin Master also promises that "this is only the beginning," referring to Hellbreak as "an unprecedented horror crossover universe that will include additional major studios and their characters from across the horror genre." While firm details about mechanics or even which horror icons might appear have yet to be revealed, the ambitious project could conceivably bring characters owned by studios like Blumhouse Productions. Universal has a longstanding distribution deal with Blumhouse, which produces franchises like The Purge, Insidious, and M3GAN. Though we do know that "character factions" of some kind will be present in the mechanics.

Hellbreak was designed to feel dangerous, cinematic, and endlessly replayable,” said Christian T. Petersen, CEO of Ghost Galaxy and design lead on Hellbreak. “Every monster, mechanic, and aspect is built to create unforgettable and terrifying moments at the table — the kind players will be talking about long after the match ends.”

Hellbreak is currently slated for a global launch in fall 2026 with more details about gameplay and art to be revealed in the coming months.
