You can make the argument that fighting games have never been more popular.
Look at the hype around the Street Fighter movie. There's also the success of Mortal Kombat II. Then there are all the fighting games we've been enjoying as of late. SEGA isn't content to sit on the sidelines during the FGC craze, which is why they've been hard at work to bring back Virtua Fighter.
Amidst RGG's Downfall, Nagoshi Studios has the Chance to Do the Unthinkable
If cooked right, Nagoshi's Gang of Dragon could be the perfect remedy for veteran Yakuza fans.
It's been two decades since Virtua Fighter 5 first released in arcades, leaving fans wondering if we'll ever see the return of the once iconic franchise.
That all changed in 2024, when Sega first teased that they'd be bringing several long-lost franchises back. First announced in 2024, we knew RGG Studio, best known for the Yakuza franchise, would be working on a then-untitled Virtua Fighter project. Today, we finally got an official update, and it won't be long before we get our hands on it: RGG's Virtua Fighter Crossroads is coming in 2027.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is a Reimaging of the Virtua Fighter Franchise
Geoff Keighley treated us to a debut teaser trailer during his Summer Game Fest 2026 showcase, hinting that this may not be a traditional Virtua Fighter experience.
Instead, the game looked more in common from what RGG Studio is best known for: a story-driven single-player experience complete with plenty of beat 'em up action. We saw some familiar faces, such as Pai Chan, as well as a hint of the more traditional fighting game combat we fell in love with so many years ago. It's possible that we'll see the best of both worlds: a rich single-player campaign supplemented by the more familiar fighting game elements.
10 Bad Games That Got Better With Updates
If at first you don't succeed, update until you do.
Given that Crossroads is a complete reimagining of the franchise, it's no surprise to see Sega and RGG Studio try something new. Also new is the fact that the game is being developed for modern consoles and PC from the very beginning. The franchise has traditionally been released in arcades first.
We'll learn more about what's in store for Virtua Fighter Crossroads during a special showcase after the Summer Game Fest stream. For now, here's a tease as to what's in store from Sega: "A city you've never seen. A story you've never heard. A totally new Virtua Fighter." Gameplay was first shown at EVO last month, but we'll get our first public look soon enough.
Stay tuned to DualShockers for more updates as they come.
