Character customization is a feature that's long been asked for in Phasmophobia, as who doesn't want to have the best drip equipped while investigating the most nefarious phantoms, banshees, and everything in between? Thankfully, the wishes of many in the player community came true with the game's Player Character Update (0.17.0.0). Now you're free to dress up your paranormal investigator as you see fit, and add more options to your supernatural wardrobe with events and other special challenges.
That said, it can be a bit tricky to understand exactly how Phasmophobia's version of character customization works. If you're looking for some insight, here's how to customize your character and have them looking their best from head to toe.

When Was Character Customization Added in Phasmophobia?
Character customization is a key feature that was cemented as part of Kinetic Games' development roadmap for Phasmophobia over the past year or two. It was finally released as the focal point of the appropriately named Player Character Update (0.17.0.0) on May 5, 2026.
At its debut, the update incidentally caused a number of gameplay-related issues that rendered certain aspects of the game almost unplayable for a substantial portion of the player community. However, an extensive and thorough series of hotfix patches were deployed days later to remedy the various bugs and glitches, including some pertaining to the Character Customization menu.
To access the Character Customization menu in Phasmophobia, start by logging into the main lobby. From there, interact with the screen to the right of the bulletin board where you usually manage your equipment loadouts and upgrades. There's now an option called 'Customization' at the bottom of the screen's left-hand drop-down menu, beneath 'Quick-Loadouts'.
Select it, and this will open the Customization menu. From here, you can fully customize your paranormal investigator, from their physical appearance to their clothes. Additionally, the ability to customize your ID Card has also been moved here (instead of the bulletin board).
All Character Customization Options in Phasmophobia
While the Character Customization menu is a feature that will receive continuous updates in Phasmophobia, it has quite a few options for players to choose from starting out.
First off, you can customize your character's physical appearance based on the game's newly established roster of actual named characters. They each even have their own backstory that you can read when selecting each one in the menu. From there, you can slightly adjust their physical features, including hairstyle, piercings, glasses, and hair color.
There are also options to customize their clothing, from their jacket to their pants. In each sub-menu you'll have a handful of default, plain looks to start with. There are also more unique options that you can purchase with your earned money from investigation contracts, similar to how you purchase equipment upgrades.
Furthermore, unlocking prestige ranks and achievements also gets you more options, with graphic tees based on the designs of the game's ID cards and badges. Seasonal events and collaborations such as the one for Alan Wake also provide clothing customization rewards you can use permanently once you've earned them in-game.
Finally, there's also the option to equip your current customized ID card to your character's jacket, along with special charms that can be hung from the card. This neat feature is located in the sub-menu where you customize your ID card and badge, via the button with the tag icon at the very bottom.
As Phasmophobia continuously adds updates and hotfixes, make sure to double-check your character's look when logging in, as sometimes clothing or your ID can change or reset.
