There are a lot of resources to be found scattered about the wastelands of Appalachia in Fallout 76. For instance, you could go out of your way to track down Black Titanium.

Speaking of ore and sediment, you might want to get your hands on some coal. This material is used for quite a few things in Fallout 76, and is something you will want to have on your person at all times.

So, where can you get your hands on a large quantity of coal in Fallout 76? Let's break down the best places to farm this useful resource.

One of the ways you can get coal in Fallout 76 isn't by collecting random junk like microscopes; it is by building your camp in a strategic location—specifically, a location with a coal vein. This will enable you to obtain coal continuously with minimal effort.

When finding a location for your camp, consider the following areas, as there are coal veins present.

East of Kerwood Mine
Mount Blair Trainyard
To the south of Belching Betty
North of Autumn Acre Cabin
Charleston Landfill
South of Rollins Labor Camp
To the east of Hornwright Estate
To the south of the Investigator's Cabin

Each of these locations offers a coal deposit, allowing you to build a resource extractor in your camp to obtain it. Resource extractors periodically get the resources from the deposit they are on top of, allowing you to continuously get resources like coal, copper, silver, and more easily.

Unfortunately, you cannot double down on this and get coal from workshops, as none of the workshops in the game offer coal as a resource. This includes the Starlight Drive-in added with the Burning Springs update.

Use Your Camp Collector

One of the best additions to your camp is undoubtedly the Collectron Station. There are varying types of this robotic companion, with each one offering to collect various types of items for you.

While not all the Collectrons will fetch coal for you, there are three of them that will. These are the Scavenger Collectron, Santatron, and the BoS (Brotherhood of Steel) Collectron.

After placing one of these Collectrons, all you need to do is tell it to collect scrap via the computer terminal. This will make it collect various types of scrap from around the area, which includes coal.

Keep in mind that this isn't nearly as fast as using an extractor, but it will allow you to get extra coal to go along with what you get from your extractor.

Mining and Refining Coal

Finally, you can get coal from simply mining it. Some mines have coal veins that you can mine to get unrefined coal, allowing you to refine it and get the resource.

The best location for collecting coal is Gauley Mine in the forest region of Appalachia. This area is located to the northwest of Arktos Pharma.

Inside, you will find various coal veins. Simply interact with them to get the unrefined coal. I recommend wearing the Excavator Power Armor while collecting coal in this way, as this set of Power Armor allows you to collect more ore when mining and increases your carrying capacity.

Once you have some unrefined coal, you will need to refine it back at your camp. To do this, go to your chemistry station, select the smelting option, and then choose coal.

To smelt coal, it requires acid and unrefined coal. When you have five of each of these materials, you can refine the unrefined coal to create two normal coal. I recommend having the Super Duper perk during this process to help you get more coal.
