The majority of the time you spend playing Subnautica 2, you’re going to be searching through abandoned wrecks, collecting hundreds of ores and building magnificent bases. It’s a pretty amazing gameplay loop, and it’s easy to lose hundreds of hours without actually realizing it.

So easy, in fact, that I almost forgot that there’s an entire Biomod system in the game that I had completely neglected. At the beginning of Subnautica 2, I installed Dash and Sea Skimmer, and then totally forgot about the whole thing until I’d completed the campaign.

Beware the snapping jaws! You're next on the menu.

Chances are, if you’re here, you’re a better player than I, and you’re looking for an elusive fish known as the Houndgar, for the Chum Cloud Active Biomod. Thing is, this fish is pretty tiny, so if you’re hunting without direction, you’re going to be looking for a good long while. Let’s see where this fish really spawns, and how to find it!

Houndgar Location

Subnautica 2 Houndgar Data

I did a bit of reading through the Houndgar Databank, and it turns out that, where you find Marrowbreach, you’ll find Houndgar. I was lucky to find my Houndgar, but come to think of it, at the time I was being relentlessly bullied by an aggressive Marrowbreach. Which now makes sense.

It seems as though these 2 have a sort of symbiotic relationship, with the Houndgar flushing out prey for the Marrowbreach to take out. The Houndgar seems to be happy to live on whatever is left behind.

So there’s your first clue. Marrowbreach are pretty common, being found patrolling places like Camp One, and the High Temperature Biome to the east of spawn. I found a Houndgar simply swimming around the higher planes of the hot area, so that’s a good place to start. The Marrowbreach is pretty large, so if you find one of those, there will surely be a Houndgar close by.

BioLab Station

Once you’ve collected your Houndgar data, you’ll also need the data of a Toxic Sponge in order to unlock the Chum Cloud Biomod. These sponges are found all over the place nearby spawn, you can’t miss them!

Once you’ve scanned both of these, head back to the Biolab Station, and you’ll be able to equip the Chum Cloud Biomod. Every 20 seconds, you can release a small green cloud of chum, which attracts predators in case you’re being attacked, giving you a chance to either scan the fish or to swim away!

This mod is great if you’re looking to scan everything and complete the databank. There are certain fish in late-game areas, like the yellow chemical runoff location in the far east, that will do huge amounts of damage to you.

And of course, you might want to try this out on any Collector Leviathans to get that difficult data entry. This big guy in the picture above got stuck on a rock, so I had to set him free. Have fun experimenting with Biomods, and find the one that suits your playstyle!
