Each new area of MIO: Memories in Orbit has new, hidden secrets to uncover and a host of new bosses to contend with. As with any good Metroidvania, MIO gates progress in various ways.
One of the most important ones is keys that are found throughout the world. Finding them requires you to explore, which in turn makes exploration much more enjoyable.
An important key that you will find in MIO is the Old Fashioned Key. It opens up a rather crucial part of the game, and leads you directly into the game's final few hours.
So, if you've found yourself wandering MIO's world with nary a clue where to go, don't sweat it. In this guide, I'll show you what the Old Fashioned Key does, where you can find it and where to use it.
What Is The Old Fashioned Key?
The Old Fashioned Key in MIO: Memories in Orbit is described as a vintage object. It comes from a time before the game's events, evoking lore that indicates this world is older than the futuristic, bleak sci-fi visage that it presents itself as.
As with all the keys and badges in the game, the Old Fashioned Key is designed to open a very particular door. These keys are not unlike the Hunters Badge and Oedon Tomb Key from Bloodborne, functioning as one-time use objects to progress the game.
Where To Find It
In order to find the Old Fashioned Key, you'll need to make your way to a very particular place. From the City Gates attunement location, head to the left. By this point, you should have the Hairpin upgrade that acts as a sort of grappling hook.
Using a combination of Hairpin moves, as well as hitting the crystals to give yourself an extra boost, you can make your way up. Keep progressing to the left until you spot a room on the bottom level.
Inside, you'll be able to drop into the pit. Waiting in this suspiciously wide-open arena is a boss. This is Calderon, a bruising boss that hits quite hard.
Defeating Calderon will grant you access to the next room, where the Old Fashioned Key awaits. Grab it, then let's press on to where you can actually use the key.
Where To Use It
The door that the Old Fashioned Key opens, which leads into the Hall of History, is rather easy to find. It's just a quick trip from the boss' room.
From where you fought Calderon, use the Hairpin to get back up to the top level. Exit to your right, where the door to the Hall of History is waiting at the bottom level.
Open the door up, then proceed. This next section of the game sees a pretty significant challenge increase, so be sure to get yourself prepared and equip any new mods you already found in this section before going any further.
