As revealed in a recent interview with Polygon, Larian Studios revealed that it will “most likely” opt for an early access release for Divinity. While the studio isn’t ready to fully commit to that yet, Larian founder Swen Vincke says that the studio is hoping to recreate its success with Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access release.

Divinity was revealed at this year’s Game Awards with a gruesome new trailer. Following the show, Polygon spoke to several team members from Larian Studios, who revealed more details about the project. We got confirmation that it will be a turn-based RPG, feature multiplayer, and have a greater emphasis on player agency. On the topic of early access, Vincke revealed that Larian is hoping to adopt the release strategy for Divinity.

“We will most likely do early access,” Vincke confirmed. “I’m saying most likely because I don’t know how the games industry changes. So I don’t want to commit to anything at this point, but it was very successful for us. The players made the game together with us. If you look at Baldur’s Gate 3 pre and post early access, that was huge in terms of systems that changed and things we could tweak. It’s invaluable to us and it became our method since the first Divinity: Original Sin, so preferably yes.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 similarly adopted an early access model. Larian initially released the first act of the game into early access in 2020. It worked with fans to tweak the game based on feedback ahead of a full 1.0 release in 2023. And of course, that version went on to win Game of the Year at the 2023 Game Awards.

Don’t expect an early access release for Divinity anytime soon, though. Larian has not revealed a release window just yet, even though Vincke says that the team has a timeline in mind: “We think we know when we’re going to be ready, but our track record is so bad, so we’re not going to make any promises.”
