Being a survival game, Windrose has a big emphasis on collecting and managing resources. Some of these resources are used to fuel the game's economic system, allowing you to trade goods for money, which is then used to buy blueprints.

However, some of the resources are used to help you survive. For instance, you will need larger supplies of wood and stone to build with. After a while, however, you will also need to start gathering resources for farming, giving you enough food to keep your health up.

Let's break down everything you need to start farming in Windrose, from collecting seeds to building a large farm.

Creating a Seedbed

Windrose Farming Guide Ancient Farm Location

There are two types of plants in Windrose: ground plants and seedbed plants. If a plant is a ground plant, it can only be planted in the ground, and if a plant is a seedbed plant, it can only be planted in a seedbed.

While you will be able to plant some seeds at the start of the game, most of them require you to build a seedbed, which can only be done after you have progressed through the story and defeated Thomas Richards.

Once you have accomplished this, make your way to an island with a foothills biome. You will need to be on the lookout for an Ancient Farm location on one of these islands. These locations appear as a wheat field on the map.

Around Ancient Farms, you can get Fertile Soil — the necessary resource to create seedbeds. Once you have gathered this material, you will unlock the ability to craft a seedbed. It takes five Fertile Soil to craft one seedbed section.

Now that you have the ability to create a seedbed, you can build a seedbed by accessing the build menu, going to the farming tab, and selecting the seedbed. Seedbeds must be placed on the ground.

Finding some plants will unlock additional structures. For instance, collecting corn will unlock the Millstone — a tool used for making gunpowder.

To obtain seeds, you will need to find the plant out in the wild. Collecting the plant has a chance to give you seeds, which can then be used for your farm. Keep in mind that there are no vendors that sell seeds or plants in Windrose.

Harvesting Your Plants

Windrose Farming Guide Harvesting Flax

Now that you know the basics, it is time to create your farm. With a seedbed created, you can plant your seeds by accessing the build menu.

From there, go to the farming tab, select the seeds you wish to plant, and plant them as you would build a structure. Once planted, you will see the sapling in the ground or seedbed.

Each of the plants in Windrose have a similar growing pattern, with each plant taking around 70 minutes to grow to maturity and become available to harvest.

When harvesting a plant that you grew, you have a greater chance of obtaining additional seeds to use for future planting.

Additionally, there is an NPC you can hire to aid you with farming. The farming contractor is obtained from the recruitment vendor in Tortuga for 20 silver coins. The NPC will help with harvesting 50 crops, granting you additional seeds for their effort. After this, additional payments will be required to have them help around your farm.

While each plant in Windrose has its own use, there are some that are better to have on your farm. For starters, you should always make sure to have flax being grown, as this is used to craft fabric.

Fabric is used for many crafting recipes, with it being a major component of ship building. Along with this, Aloe is very useful to have. Aloe is used to craft Elixirs of Concentration, which will increase your critical damage by 30%.

This boost to your critical damage is especially good against bosses, allowing you to take them down faster. Cayenne peppers are also a great ingredient.

These peppers are used in many meals, but they are also used to create Gunroom Grog, which increases your reload speed by 15%. This is a very useful tool for those who like to fight using firearms.
