Indie game studio The Astronauts has just released a major new content update for their dark fantasy RPG shooter, Witchfire—adding melee weapons to the game for the first time, as well some exciting new features.

8 years in the making, it finally enters Early Access, and it was worth the wait.

Witchfire has sold over 500,000 copies since the beginning of its early access, garnering very positive Steam reviews, with many users praising the game's satisfying combat and haunting visual style.

The latest update, named The Reckoning, aims to evolve Witchfire's combat with the introduction of four melee weapons—each with their own unique abilities or utility.

Witchfire's Close-Quarter Combat Is Evolving

According to Witchfire's latest press release, the four melee weapons being added will include the morgenstern, katar, and shield, giving players an entirely new playstyle to experiment with.

The Astronauts didn't stop there; they've also added three new guns, including a triple-barrel shotgun named The Tribunal—the perfect pairing for the newly added melee weapons.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing CEO and Founder of The Astronauts, Adrian Chmielarz, to get a closer look at The Reckoning update and what's next for Witchfire.

Adrian expressed that the new melee weapons add an entirely new layer of depth to the game, but don't worry, "Guns are still the king. This is still a shooter, but now you can replace your basic fist melee with something completely different, like a morningstar, claws, or an exotic knife called a katar."

One of the three new guns, The Tribunal shotgun, allows players to dash or slide and charge up powerful attacks, encouraging a run-and-gun playstyle that will synergize well with melee attacks.

With so many new weapons to try out, The Astronauts have added a shooting range that includes an interactive bestiary where players can test out their improved loadouts before they embark on expeditions.

Witchfire is now fully verified on Steam Deck, with accessibility options including font size adjustments and an arachnophobia filter, which arrives just in time for a spider-themed calamity event.

For the witch hunters looking for the most extreme challenge possible, two new gameplay modifiers have also been added. For more information about these new changes, visit Witchfire's Steam patch notes or their official website.

Witchfire is available now on Steam and Epic Games Store with a 20% discount.
