Marvel's Wolverine had one of the most violent video game trailers of the PlayStation 5 era, but the developers have confirmed that the blood and gore can be turned off using the game's accessibility options.
Insomniac Games first teased Marvel's Wolverine back in 2021, with a brief story trailer showing him unsheathing his claws in Madripoor. It wasn't until the June 2026 Sony State of Play that fans were given a proper look at the gameplay, and unlike the Wolverine from the old X-Men cartoons, this version of Logan is free to carve enemies up with his Adamantium claws.
Marvel's Wolverine Release Date Confirmed (And It's Ducking GTA 6)
Insomniac Games has announced the release date for Marvel's Wolverine on Twitter/X, and it's launching on PS5 well ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The violence on display in the Marvel's Wolverine trailer might be a bit much for some, especially people who want to stream the game. Fortunately, Insomniac Games has prepared something for the fans who don't enjoy Wolverine giving emergency vasectomies to the mutant-haters of the world, as revealed in an interview with IGN.
Marvel's Wolverine Lets Players Turn Off The Gore
In an interview with Marvel's Wolverine Game Director Mike Daly, it was revealed that the wanton destruction can be toned down.
"We know that it's not for everyone," Daly said, "And because we knew this was going to be a big part of the game from the beginning, we also implemented an accessibility feature to turn off gore."
Wolverine's whole gimmick is that he has bone claws that are coated with the most powerful non-magical metal in the Marvel universe, meaning there's very little he can't cut. This has caused issues with media that is intended for kids, especially as that's the target audience for a lot of X-Men content.
Wolverine's whole gimmick is that he has bone claws that are coated with the most powerful non-magical metal in the Marvel universe, meaning there's very little he can't cut.
The Wolverine who has appeared in X-Men cartoons, especially the one from the '90s, has been stuck threatening enemies with his claws, only getting to use them against enemies that are made of metal. Thankfully, the X-Men have no shortage of metallic foes, with the likes of the Sentinels and the Reavers giving Wolverine plenty of opportunities to whip his claws out. However, this has resulted in bloodless carnage.
This is why it's so jarring to see Wolverine tear people apart in such a visceral way in the Marvel's Wolverine trailer. Sure, he's been able to be more violent in the live-action films, but even these have refrained from showing him tearing people's innards out. This also counts for Logan himself, who takes a ton of damage from foes, and has to rely on his Healing Factor to quickly stitch up his wounds.
It can't be as simple as just turning off blood effects, considering how Wolverine slashes foes to pieces in all kinds of interesting ways in the new trailer. The toned-down version may end up looking like a totally different game, or maybe all the enemies will be replaced with robots, like the old German version of Team Fortress.
For longtime X-Men fans, it's awesome to see Wolverine finally cut loose, especially as the shadow of censorship has hung over him for so long. Insomniac Games should be commended for giving Logan the R-rated video game he truly deserves, especially after the far more family-friendly Marvel's Spider-Man games.
Not everyone is as down for high-levels of on-screen violence, especially when it comes to blood and guts, so Insomniac Games should also be commended for allowing people to play without discomfort, rather than forcing everyone along for the ride, especially after Wolverine's long history of not getting to use his claws for their intended purpose.
