Xbox arrives with news days after Summer Game Fest

E3 might be dead, but the E3-era console-war gusto is in full resurrection mode thanks to Xbox and PlayStation’s rekindled “exclusives” rivalry. Thankfully, there’s Summer Game Fest — and Xbox’s own well-timed showcase — to keep the E3 hype spirit alive, too.

Every June, the gaming industry finds a new way to recreate the exact same ritual of cryptic teases and impossible expectations (with a few major game delays snuck in for good measure). With Summer Game Fest 2026 and PlayStation’s summer Direct in the rearview mirror, Sunday is Xbox's turn.

The company that once told us the future was HD, Achievements, and a little game called Gears of War is back on stage and armed with trailers. Will we see the next big Xbox exclusive? A surprise sequel? A shadow drop? The only thing promised is a long look at a Gears of War prequel, E-Day. Some things never die.

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is a new Next Generation-era thriller from Silent Hill 2 remake devs

Silent Hll 2 and Cronos: The New Dawn developer Bloober Team is heading to the final frontier. On Saturday, the developer and publisher Paramount Games Studio announced Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a new sci-fi psychological thriller title set in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier features a face familiar to Star Trek: The Next Generation fans: Ro Laren, the Bajoran officer who often clashed with Starfleet in the late-'80s revival of the Trek franchise. Ro will be played in Shadow Frontier by the actor who originally played her, Michelle Forbes.

How to watch Xbox Games Showcase 2026 and what to expect

Microsoft's annual Xbox Games Showcase streams live on Sunday, June 7, promising "first gameplay looks and huge news on upcoming titles" from Xbox Game Studios and third-party partners "from the biggest franchises to soon-to-be indie darlings." The Xbox event will be followed by a "Direct" deep dive into Gears of War: E-Day, the new Gears game from The Coalition.

The showcase will also be the first under new CEO of Microsoft Gaming Asha Sharma, who took over for now-retired Xbox boss Phil Spencer in February. But don't expect a major update on the next-gen Xbox, Project Helix; chief content officer Matt Booty says Project Helix won't have a major presence at Xbox Games Showcase 2026.
