Crafting is an essential part of survival in Subnautica 2, and knowing what to craft and when can make all the difference between survival and a dark, watery grave. Crafting items is as simple as 3D-printing them from an available Fabicator, the real challenge lies in sourcing and retrieving the required ingredients for each item. However, with each new item you craft, life will become considerably easier in the deep blue sea.
Subnautica 2: 8 Beginner Tips for Survival
With these tips, you'll be able to thrive in Subnautica 2's open oceans.
While the initial Fabricator in the emergency Lifepod will enable you to craft some basic tools, you'll soon need to craft and power your own fully operational Fabricator in order to progress. For the early stages, each of these pieces of equipment can make a massive difference to both your strategy and survival on the planet Proteus.
For Slicing And Dicing
- Requirements: 3x Titanium
The Survival Multitool is one of the first items you'll want to craft in Subnautica 2, and thankfully, it is also one of the easiest. All you'll need to find is three Titanium deposits, which can easily be located within a few meters of the Lifepod, and then you're up and away with your first line of defence against this vast and terrifying ocean.
The primary use of the multitool is to cut away at plants like corals and kelp, which can often be used in crafting recipes for items like medical supplies. However, despite the name, the tool is really quite limited beyond this. As a last resort, you can use it to whack any smaller hostile fish species and bash them away for a brief second, or, as the PDA voice-over mentions, to murder any fellow colonists out there.
9 Scanner
Your New Best Friend
- Requirements: 2x Titanium, 2x Quartz, 1x Basic Battery
The Scanner is arguably the most important tool in your inventory, at least in the early game, as it will enable you to learn new parts and tools for crafting, as well as identify different plant and alien species and their properties. Without a Scanner at hand, you're essentially wandering blind and don't stand much of a chance of making any meaningful progress.
Thankfully, it is one of the first items you can craft with the Lifepod fabricator and only requires basic materials that you can find nearby. Titanium and Quartz can be found in abundance near the starting area. Batteries can also be crafted at the fabricator or found in supply crates around abandoned human structures. Once you have your scanner up and running, it's time to put it to good use. Just keep an eye on the condition as it can deteriorate fast. Until you have crafted a Repair Tool, it may be necessary to build multiple scanners to ensure you always have one in good condition.
8 Air Bladder
In Case of Emergencies
- Requirements: 2x Titanium, 1x Rubber
The Air Bladder is an item that you might not think much of at first, but it will become your best friend when curiosity gets the better of you, and you have to make a quick dash to the surface to regain some oxygen. This handy little device acts as a buoyant and will propel you back to the surface whenever you activate it, enabling you to stay in deeper areas for slightly longer before returning to get air.
10 Best Survival Games With High Replay Value
These 10 survival games are the best to come back to and explore to your heart's content solo or with friends time and time again.
This can make a big difference when it comes to collecting resources or mission-related information, and ultimately acts as a huge time saver. It can also be a handy tool if you come under attack from some of the more aggressive sealife in Subnautica 2. Simply, inflate and deploy to parachute your way out of any dangerous situation — just be mindful not to hit any cave ceilings while you're at it.
7 Basic Fins
One of the Bare Necessities
- Requirements: 2x Rubber, 2x Fiber
Fins might not seem like an especially important item, but you really are missing out if you neglect them in the early game. Not only will they improve your movement speed, enabling you to dive further and longer, but they are also very easy to make and will not take up any important space as they are automatically assigned to your character's feet.
Fins can be seen as a form of passive boost without needing to use adaptations, allowing you to glide seamlessly through the water rather than the belaboured struggle which early-game swimming can be. Like many other early game items, even if the initial fins' performance isn't hugely noticeable at first, they provide the foundations to upgrade further and provide a significant speed boost.
6 Habitat Builder
You've Got To Live Somewhere
- Requirements: 2x Titanium, 1x Glass, 1x Basic Battery, 1x Copper Wire
If you want to survive for any meaningful length of time in Subnautica 2, it's a good idea to consider building at least one base from which to run your survival operation. Not only do bases provide a good location to rest and store materials, but they can also operate as production facilities in their own way once you have upgraded them enough.
Once you have a basic base set up, you can then move on to crafting more refined and complex materials, creating vehicles and even making your own underwater garden. The Habitat Builder can be used on just about any flat surface, and you're encouraged to experiment with different base locations in order to make exploration more efficient.
5 Standard O2 Tank
An Early Game-Changer
- Requirements: 2x Titanium, 2x Silver, 1x Rubber
Undoubtedly one of the best early-game investments you can possibly make in Subnautica 2 is the crafting of a Standard O2 Tank. This will increase your O2 capacity by at least double, enabling you to finally explore with a degree of freedom rather than constantly having to think about survival.
Just with this piece of equipment alone, your range of exploration is vastly increased, and you can finally head to some of the deeper biomes in the game. With that said, don't get too complacent while exploring, as you can easily find yourself short of oxygen without enough time to get back to the surface if you're not careful.
4 Wakemaker
Glide Around With Ease
- Requirements: 1x Wiring Kit, 1x Silver, 1x Grease, 1x Basic Battery
The Wakemaker is Subnautica 2's answer to the original's Seaglide. These handly little wrist jets will grant you a movement speed bonus when equipped, and also come with their own lights, meaning you can free up space in your inventory by ditching your flashlight if you crafted one at all.
Not only does the Wakemaker allow you to get more done while exploring due to your increased movement speed, it can also be helpful for evading predators such as Needlers and Bulletheads. While it's not a temporary solution to undersea travel, it is certainly a good start and a useful tool to have handy when exploring some of the more maze-like sunken structures.
3 Sonic Resonator
The Closest Thing To A Weapon
- Requirements: 1x Basic Battery, 2x Titanium Ingot, 2x Lead, 1x Wiring Kit
The Sonic Resonator is something you'll need to build eventually if you want to progress through the game's main story, but it is also by far one of the most useful items you can craft in the early-game. This blast-rifle charges up and fires a powerful pulse through the water and is primarily used for clearing webbed virus structures and Viral Blooms, which will, in turn, enable you to unlock new Adaptations.
On top of that, the Sonic Resonator is the closest thing you'll get to a useful weapon in Subnautica 2. While it is pretty ineffective against larger creatures and Leviathans, it can act as a temporary stun gun against some of the smaller threats, buying you valuable time to complete your task or find your escape.
Entropy Applies Here Too
- Requirements: 1x Basic Battery, 1x Titanium Ingot, 1x Sulphur, 1x Wiring Kit
The Repair Tool is one of those items which can often be overlooked. You might delay crafting it since you don't need it right away, but the Repair Tool will ensure that all your other gear remains in good condition, and can be a lifesaver in sudden emergencies such as encounters with Leviathans.
8 Best Open World Games With Underwater Exploration
These open world games feature the best underwater exploration in various enthralling ways.
While primarily useful for fixing up your own vehicles and equipment, another advantage of the repair tool is being able to repair broken doors or hatches in a crashed spaceship wreckage, which will open the way for you to find better items and gear.
1 Tadpole
A Basic Exploratory Vehicle
- Requirements: 2x Titanium Ingot, 1x Glass, 1x System Chip, 1x Power Cell
The Tadpole is the basic starting vehicle you can create once you have a semi-functioning base. However, it's also just about the only one you'll need in order to explore the vast majority of the game world. Its agile design comes at the expense of durability, and it can easily become damaged if you spend too long in deeper, or hotter, regions — so ensure you've brought your repair tool with you every time you go out in it.
On top of being a faster, safer mode of transportation, the Tadpole can also act as an exploratory Oxygen hub to return to when exploring narrower caves. Additionally, it can be upgraded with additional cargo space to make sure that each of your expeditions reap the maximum possible rewards.
