Throughout its existence, the PlayStation family of consoles has had a special place in its heart for RPG fans. The original PS1 was home to many classic (J)RPGs, such as Parasite Eve and the legendary Final Fantasy 7. That tradition has carried on through the PlayStations many interactions. In fact, the PS4 era of RPGs was a prominent one to say the least.
Many amazing franchises peaked during the PS4 generation and a number of new titles came to the forefront as well, changing how people perceived what an RPG even is. And the best part is, a lot of them don’t take a long time to get to the meat and potatoes of the adventure. That’s right, there are a number of modern RPGs available for the PS4 that get you right into the action and off on your journey.

10 Tom Clancy's The Division 2
Rock With the Ops
Tom Clancy's The Division 2
The apocalyptic squad-based action RPG Tom Clancy's The Division 2 drops players into a Washington DC rife with chaos and never lets up. This game is full of insane shootouts and raids where you have to rely on your team and some tactical thinking in order to come out the other side of it alive. It’s a game that has you hit the ground running hard and never really let up.
The Division 2 is a perfect game for players who love teaming up with friends or strangers online for their third-person shooter experiences. Its RPG elements and seemingly endless amount of loot and guns make it an easy game to get into but hard to put down.
9 Fallout 4
A New Chapter In The End of World
Like in most games in the series, the sardonic wit and tongue-in-cheek humor of Fallout 4 is apparent early on. As yet another vault dweller venturing out into the open world for the first time, you can basically carve your own path of adventure in 4. While Fallout 3 was a bold step forward for the series, 4 has more presence and a larger color palette that make it a more inviting experience.
The Fallout series is one of the best RPG franchises out there and its popularity has only grown thanks to the hit TV series. If you’re looking for an RPG that’s going to pull you in from the get-go, this is it. Just make sure you don’t get radiation poisoning.
8 Disco Elysium
Dope Detectives
While Disco Elysium may seem like your traditional point-and-click RPG whodunit murder mystery, it quickly proves that it's anything but normal. The game takes you on a very odd trip that ranges from enthralling to psychedelic depending on the choices you make. It’s not the kind of game that follows your standard Law & Order procedural crime drama formula.
Disco Elysium is such a unique gameplay experience with an intriguing story that draws you in and never let's go. This is the kind of RPG game that keeps you guessing and leads you down paths with all sorts of unexpected twists and turns.
7 Elden Ring
Maidneless In Seattle
Elden Ring is the kind of game that pats you on the head, kicks you out the door with only the clothes on your back, and wishes you luck. From the moment you enter the world of The Lands Between, you’re free to explore and take your journey any which way you choose. Sure, there are paths you can take that will make it easier on you, so to speak. But you can also end up in the middle of nowhere after opening a chest and being transported by a booby trap.
Like all the other games in the Soulsborne genre, Elden Ring is very proud of its difficulty level. That means you’re in for a challenge if you’re going to play it. But, it’s also a gorgeous world full of amazing creatures that’s fun to explore, even if you do get your butt kicked every time you get in a fight.
6 Dragon Age: Inquisition
These Dragons Don't Dance
The long-awaited third entry in the Dragon Age series, Inquisition brought the franchise to modern-gen consoles. While previous entries had been rather linear, Inquisition went for a more open-world experience. It was definitely a new direction for the series and a bit divisive, but it still resonated with many fans of the series.
The long-running Dragon Age RPG series still seems like it’s far from over, but Inquisition at least left players with enough content to keep them occupied for a while. If you’ve never played the Dragon Age games before, this isn’t the worst time to try and jump on board.
5 Monster Hunter: World
On The Hunt
Monster Hunter: World Game
While the series had been around for quite some time, Monster Hunter: World brought the franchise into the mainstream gamer zeitgeist. The whole game loop of going out to hunt giant beasts with your hunting party, then turning the parts you harvested from the hunt into shiny new gear seemed to be streamlined in this entry. Sure, you could still do all the cooking and crafting of previous entries, but the barrier of entry was a lot lower.
World got you into the game and hunting monsters pretty fast since it basically dropped you right into a tutorial hunt. It’s a game where you see the massive scope and scale of the world almost immediately, filling you with awe and wonder.
4 The Outer Worlds
Space Is The Place
I’m pretty sure that I played The Outer Worlds differently than most folks. I basically decided I was going to kill everyone I ran into rather than focus on progressing the story. It made things difficult but hilarious right off the bat. And oh boy did my friends get mad when I shot my companions right away.
While the kind of chaos I brought to The Outer Wilds was unhinged to say the least, it shows how quickly you can just dive into a session and get going. Even if you choose to play by the rules, there’s plenty of interesting and unique adventures to be had in Outer Wilds. In many ways, it's like an outer space version of the Fallout series.
3 Bloodborne
A Bloody Good Time
Another tough-as-nails entry from the team at From Software, Bloodborne took the Demon’s Souls formula and somehow made it darker. Its gothic atmosphere and meticulously challenging combat made it a title that stood on its own while giving masochistic RPG fans more of what they wanted from the From Software team. Like one would expect, it’s chock-full of fantastically designed creatures that are ready to kick your butt at the drop of a hat.
Bloodborne is an intense non-stop thrill ride that gets you right into the chunky flesh of trying to survive in a world that wants you dead. If you enjoy a game that puts your skills to the limits, but makes you feel like a badass when you win, and rewards you for exploring its dark world, definitely check out Bloodborne.
2 Horizon Zero Dawn
It's A Wild World
The world of Horizon Zero Dawn is both terrifying and awe-inspiring from the get-go. The moment you start, you’re dropped into a world where the lines between nature and technology are blurred. We’re talking cybernetic sabertooth tigers and robo raptors that seem to really hate humans. As soon as your journey with Aloy started, you were forced to survive and make your way into a world that seemed to want you extinct.
As you travel through Horizon Zero Dawn, the environments just get more and more breathtaking and the danger grows as well. It makes for a balance of beauty and eeriness that keeps you on your toes through the whole game. And that’s before you factor in all the humans that want you dead too.
1 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Toss A Coin
The Witcher Wiki / CD Projekt REDThe adventures of Geralt of Rivia reached a brand-new level with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was a culmination of everything great about the first chapters and streamlined everything for a near-perfect RPG experience. Fighting giant monsters with blades, spells, and masterful traps never felt smoother. And there was so much world to explore and quests to finish that players were entertained for hours on end.
The Witcher 3 is the kind of RPG that makes other RPGs better through the sheer level of polish and innovation. If you’re a fan of the genre and love a good fantasy role-playing experience, the whole Witcher series should really be on your must-play games list. Maybe you can get through them all before The Witcher 4 comes out.
