I have a major problem with LEGO sets in that I tend to buy more than I have actual shelf space for. Collecting and building sets is a hobby that I’ve enjoyed for a majority of my existence. I love to put on a movie, bust out a set to build, and just unwind.

10 LEGO Sets Based on Games Fans Regret Not Buying When They Were Still Easy to Find
These 10 video game LEGO sets used to be easily available, but now they're selling for more than double their original retail price.
Since LEGO started partnering with companies like Nintendo, Sega, and Epic Games, my problem has only intensified. There are a few video game-inspired LEGO sets in particular that I’ve been dying to get my hands on, but my wallet can only take so much punishment! While some LEGO sets look great in a box, there are some sets based on games that you need to take out and just build.
10 LEGO Super Mario: Adventures with Interactive Mario Starter Set
A New Way to Build and Play
When LEGO revealed that not only would they be coming out with a number of Mario-inspired sets, but they’d have new interactive features, I basically freaked out. The interactive Mario set allows you to make your own little levels for everyone’s favorite plumber to engage with.
It feels like most LEGO sets end up being display pieces or dioramas, but this set, and all the expansions that have come since its launch, feel made for play time. If there was ever a set begging to be taken out of the box and played with, it’s this one. Super Mario is for sure a franchise that deserves the LEGO treatment.
9 LEGO Super Mario Game Boy
Perfection in the Palm of Your Hand
The thing that makes the LEGO Super Mario Game Boy such a cool set is all the little details. Not only is it a nearly-to-scale replica of the original Nintendo handheld, it also comes with Link’s Awakening and Super Mario World cartridges for fans to build. You can even slot the cartridges in and slide one of three lenticular images into the screen to make it look like the games are being played.
Keeping such a work of art as the LEGO Game Boy in the box would be a true travesty. This set definitely deserves to be assembled and put on display.
8 LEGO Minecraft The Creeper
Taking the Crafting to Real Life
lego.comYou don’t leave a big, giant, Creeper like this in a box. Nope, a work of art like this needs to be shown to the world. Standing at an impressive 8 inches tall, the Minecraft Creeper may seem like a whole lot of green, but a closer inspection shows just how meticulous this particular set really is.
Coming in at a whopping 665 pieces, there’s a whole lot of work that goes into giving the Creeper set that signature pixelated Minecraft look, making it a great way to spend an afternoon. There’s even a secret compartment in its head that you’d never know about if you didn’t build it!
7 LEGO Fortnite Mecha Team Leader
A Victory Royale for Your LEGO Collection
What can I say other than I’m a sucker for giant mechs like Voltron and the Megazord. This LEGO set based on the Mecha Team Leader skin from Fortnite is a massive masterpiece. It’s also extremely easy to make it strike a cool battle pose with its laser sword in hand. It’s almost like making a LEGO Gundam model.
The Fortnite Mecha Team Leader also comes with a few cool little bonuses, like a minifig Team Leader that you can put in the big one’s chest and some in-game bonuses for LEGO Fortnite. Just make sure you clear enough display space because this is a big one.
6 LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone
Gotta Build Fast
lego.comThe iconic first level from Sega’s speedy, blue mascot’s first game makes one heck of a good-looking LEGO diorama. And it’s loaded to the brim with details like power-up monitors, gold rings, checkpoint, and springboard. It also comes with a cute little Sonic minifig and a set of chaos emeralds. And, of course, there’s the trademark of any good Sonic level, a nice, round loop-de-loop.
There are a few enemies to build as well. That includes the wicked Dr. Robotnik and his lackeys, Moto Bug and Crabmeat that you can place. It’s the perfect LEGO set for anyone who has a soft spot for Sonic the Hedgehog.

5 LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System
No Cart Blowing Required
Honestly, the LEGO NES is one of the most impressive sets that’s ever been put out. Not only do you get to put together a replica of the classic console as well as a Super Mario Bros cartridge, but there’s an old-school CRT-style TV to assemble as well. The TV screen is set up to look like a Mario level and there’s a manual crank to make the background move.
This fantastic LEGO kit is the kind of thing that retro game lovers would be elated to show off as part of their collection. It’s a set that’s bound to give older gamers a nostalgic flashback to Saturday mornings spent sitting on the living room floor in front of the ‘tube.
4 LEGO Pac-Man Arcade
A Truly A-MAZE-ing Set
There’s a lot to unpack in the LEGO Pac-Man Arcade set. The thing is just full of little details and interactive tidbits for fans to discover. You can turn a crank to make Pac-Man and the ghosts on the screen move around and the player's select buttons light up a quarter slot when pressed. There’s even a tinier arcade cab and minifig that fit inside the larger cab.
While this is a pricier set at $269.99, it’s still cheaper than buying an actual functioning Pac-Man arcade cab. Although if you did have a real cab, the LEGO version would make an excellent companion piece for it.
3 LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block
More than Just a Yellow Square
lego.comWhile it may just look like your standard big, yellow question mark block, the LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block set contains multitudes. Inside the question block are a number of miniature dioramas of areas from Super Mario 64, including Princess Peach’s castle, the King Bob-omb level, and even that adorable little blue penguin that everyone loves to torture.
There’s so many teeny little features to each area that it would be a shame to leave it in the box and not scrutinize it in fine detail. If you can get your hands on one, it’s a really cool set to put together.
2 LEGO Atari 2600
Vintage Style
lego.comMuch like the LEGO NES, the LEGO Atari 2600 is another replica of a classic, vintage home console. While there’s no TV set, there is a hidden living room diorama inside the base of the console of a decked-out living room setup that includes classic accessories like a boom box. Along with the console and three cartridge replicas, the set also has three scenes from old school titles like Centipede and Asteroids to accentuate everything.
While it won’t play any video games, the LEGO Atari 2600 is still a sleek addition to anyone’s collection. Especially if you miss the days of everything having wood paneling on it.
1 LEGO Legend of Zelda Great Deku Tree 2-in-1
A Timeless Masterpiece
This truly breathtaking set has the added bonus of having two different configurations. The LEGO Great Deku Tree can be made to resemble either the Ocarina of Time or Breath of the Wild versions of the beloved Deku Tree. It’s also pretty cool that it comes with a Princess Zelda minifig and three different Links from different eras of the beloved franchise.
It’s a stunningly gorgeous piece, regardless of whether you prefer the old school Ocarina or BotW Deku Tree set up and probably one of the coolest LEGO sets overall available today. I don’t know why anyone would just keep LEGO sets in a box to begin with, but this one is just screaming to be put together.
