Final Fantasy 14's second FanFest this year just wrapped in Berlin, Germany last weekend. Director Naoki Yoshida would take to the stage donning the armor of the new upcoming tank job, Bastion, alongside other sweeping changes coming to the game.
Towards the end of the showcase, Yoshida would introduce Final Fantasy 7's remake director, Naoki Hamaguchi, who'd go on to confirm that Final Fantasy 7's Remake would feature in the MMO's upcoming raid series. This new raid series, Beyond the Lifestream, was revealed with new art of Cloud and Sephiroth looming over the city of Midgard. We also learned that we're getting new Golden Saucer content that will be Final Fantasy 7-themed, but outside of that, details remain sparse.
So, while we wait for more to be revealed at the next FanFest in Tokyo, it's only fair that we dive into some speculation and start writing our wish list for everything we'd like to see.
10 Cait Sith Mount
I Wanna Ride That Moogle
Image Via Square EnixEver since the devious Cait Sith debuted in the original Final Fantasy 7, I've personally always wanted to hug that giant moogle it rides.
In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, we even got the opportunity to do so, as the choice to play as the spy cat and his fortune-telling moogle became available. Sure, he may have been the worst character to play in the entire game, but I call that being lore accurate.
Final Fantasy 14 is also home to several silly mounts, such as the Adamantoise, which physically makes me nauseous to ride, or the Paissa. So I have no doubt a Cait Sith mount would fit organically here.
I won't lie, I find the likelihood of a Cait Sith minion far more likely than getting to ride this giant boy around and see his big feet stomp around everywhere. But if there's one thing that would make Lalafell players happy, it would be this.
9 Hell House Battle
The True Greatest Boss In The Game
Between all the Shinra attacks, Cloud's identity crisis, and Sephiroth trying to destroy the planet with a meteor, it's easy to forget that Final Fantasy 7 was a pretty goofy game. Take, for example, the Hell House fight, which is equal parts jump scare and a laugh-out-loud moment.
Most of us who have played the game are probably a little traumatized by our first encounter with it. You face this creepy boss early in the game as a random encounter in the slums of Sector 6. At this point, you're only rocking Cloud and Aerith as well, which adds extra pressure to the fight.
The Remake version of the game would entirely revamp this fight, turning it into a main story event and giving it far more focus. Thankfully, this didn't take away from the overall experience, and the missile-firing house didn't lose any of its aura in the process.
A dedicated raid encounter to this boss would surprisingly fit organically within Final Fantasy 14's own world, and would absolutely be a fun easter egg for fans. Besides, we're likely to fight several iterations of Jenova anyway, so it'll be a nice break in between.
8 More Chocobo Racing Content
A Return To A Forgotten Minigame
Chocobos are an iconic part of Final Fantasy 7. You need one to cross Midgardsormr's river, can ride one to avoid the dreaded forest frogs, and, most importantly, dedicate your life to breeding the perfect Chocobo to acquire the Knights of the Round Materia.
But another use for the Chocobos and the complicated breeding mechanics is that you can ride them in the Golden Saucer for prizes. Most notably, you can nab the Sprint Shoes that automatically grant you Haste at the start of every battle, which is pretty powerful.
Final Fantasy 14 would actually borrow a very similar racing system to Final Fantasy 7, letting you breed Chocobos for better stats, bet on ones you think will win, and grind the minigame out to earn expensive mounts and snazzy glamours.
Surprisingly, the game mode hasn't had an update since Patch 4.3, well over eight years ago. With the Chocobo minigames making a comeback in Rebirth, and most likely Revelations, it'd be timely to see the FF14 team add a few maps to this game mode at the very least.
7 Final Fantasy 7 Themed Gear
Dark Knight with Masamune Combo
As any Final Fantasy 14 player knows, the glamour system is the real endgame of the MMO. Some players prefer to create their own iconic character designs with their Warrior of Light, while others want to simply cosplay as their favorite Final Fantasy character.
During the most recent Live Letter in Berlin, it was confirmed we'd get glamours for Tifa and Barret's outfits, fulfilling the wishes of countless FF14 players. But these aren't the only themed gear I want to see come out of this raid.
While we already have Cloud's Advent Children outfit, it would be such a missed opportunity to lose out on his iconic SOLDIER uniform as well. Surprisingly, we've gone almost 10 years and we still haven't gotten Cloud's Buster Sword or Sephiroth's iconic white hair as a cosmetic choice either.
If there was ever a time to introduce these glamours and appease the loyal and passionate player base there, it's during this raid series.
6 Let Us Fight Genesis
Redemption For A Loveless Character
While the focus is on Final Fantasy 7, it'd be a tragedy if spin-off titles like Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus were missed. Genesis is one such character fans have even been speculating about, wondering whether we'll get to fight him in Final Fantasy Revelations. I say if we don't get to fight him there, we should get to fight him here to represent Crisis Core.
As the main antagonist of Crisis Core, Genesis pops up multiple times throughout the game to tease Zack and recite from his favorite play about the woes of life. Eventually, this culminates in an intense fight with Genesis, who uses the power of Minerva's Materia to transform into his final form, resembling one of Sephiroth's own terrifying forms.
It's easy to see how Genesis could fit in seamlessly into the raid series, either showing us regular Genesis at the start and his battle being this Genesis Avatar form, or letting us duke it out with his human form as well.
Regardless, if he does show up as a boss, he had better come with a new rendition of The Price of Peace while we're at it.
5 Jenova Representation
Slay Mother (Literally)
Jenova is one of the most underrated bosses across Final Fantasy's diverse catalogue, which is a shame, because she has by far some of the creepiest lore to go with it.
Thankfully, the Remake series has been taking her on a solid redemption arc, giving her several new terrifying forms that have a stronger connection to Sephiroth. I have no doubt that we'll be duking it out with at least one of Jenova's forms throughout the raid series, but if I had it my way, we'd get to fight more than just her iconic final form.
At the very least, I'm hoping that Jenova Lifeclinger, the famous form that appears after Sephiroth kills Aerith, also appears as a boss fight to set up Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's chaotic and brilliant final sequences. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Final Fantasy 14 to feature two different versions of the same boss within its raid series either, as we've seen in the Alexander and Omega raids.
4 Shinra
Square Off Against the Turks Once More
Image Via Square EnixThe Shinra Organization is arguably one of the most iconic aspects of Final Fantasy 7, serving as our main antagonists for the first half of the game. We'd get to fight against their mechs, SOLDIER's, but most iconically, their faction of sharply dressed special agents, the Turks.
I'm personally a bit torn on how I'd want Shinra to be included, however.I could see an argument for having an entire section focused on Shinra fights: the Scorpion Tail, the Airbuster, the Turks, and wrapping it up with one of the leaders, like Hojo or Scarlett.
One argument against including some of the more iconic Shinra fights, such as the Scorpion Tail, is that it already exists in the Level 70 Dungeon Ala Mhigo. Although rumors are swirling that the Scorpion Tail could end up being the mount from the raid series, so we'll just have to wait and see.
I also wouldn't hate it if they merged a lot of the Turks and maybe even Rufus into a single battle, like the Knights of the Round fight in Heavensward. Except, instead of powerful knights clad in armor, it's just the Turks showing off their synergy fighting like they do in the Remakes.
There are only so many battles we can get in this raid series, but it'd be a tragedy if the Turks and Shinra don't get any representation.
3 The Gi
A Natural Fit For The MMO
If there's any faction in the game that could easily slot into Final Fantasy 14 from Final Fantasy 7, it's the Gi.
In the Remakes, the Gi's lore was fleshed out to reveal an age-old conflict with Aerith's ancestors, the Ancients. As the Gi weren't of this world, they weren't allowed to enter the Lifestream, which effectively leaves them immortal and constantly suffering. Which is why this ghostly group would go on to create the Black Materia and attempt to summon Meteor to wipe out the planet and hopefully give them their long-awaited rest.
Given that the storyline in Dawntrail focused on the concept of immortality and the real cost it had on the living, I could see this sub-plot fitting naturally within FF14's pre-established lore. Gi Nattak also has a killer design, and I, personally, would love to face off against him in a future raid.
2 Weiss
A Superboss Deserving of Its Name
Weiss was the surprise superboss in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, frustrating players to no end. Weiss is the main antagonist of the Vincent-led spin-off game Dirge of Cerberus, but in the remake series, he appears as a digital recreation made by Chadley for us to fight. Due to him arriving at the end of the main game, plus Yuffie's own DLC, the developers went all out to make the character one of the hardest fights in any Final Fantasy game ever.
Given Final Fantasy 14's tendency to honor superbosses' appearances in their collab content, such as Yiazmat appearing in the Ivalice Alliance raids, or Omega in his very own raid series. So it wouldn't be out of the norm for Weiss to make a special appearance in the upcoming collab.
Much like the fight with Weiss in Remake, which would force players to fight him on Hard mode, this fight could also be a new way to have players try out this new tier of raid difficulty by being exclusive to it. If we want to stick to the theme of his fight, that is.
1 Safer Sephiroth
Let Him Destroy The Solar System
Of course, it wouldn't be a Final Fantasy 7-focused raid if we didn't get to square off against Sephiroth's iconic final boss form.
I have no doubt we'll face off against multiple variations of Sephiroth throughout the raid series, but if there's one form we're all but guaranteed to see, it's this one.
Final Fantasy 14 are no stranger to faithfully translating a villain's iconic final form into a raid, going so far as to retain their ultimate moves as show-stopping moments players need to react to in the fight. Imagine getting to see a new rendition of his Supernova move in the middle of the battle as a last-minute DPS check. The sheer disrespect of needing to sit through a two-minute animation that is all but guaranteed to wipe your party no matter what would be a bold choice from the devs, but I'd respect it.
