Eric Warner is a Journalist and Multimedia Producer based in New England with over seven years of experience producing stories for multiple print, online, radio, and video publications.

Eric has been a gaming fan ever since getting an original Xbox for Christmas in the early 2000's. From then on, he has become enthralled in the gaming world, spending thousands of hours in Halo multiplayer matches, climbing dozens of towers across the Assassin's Creed games, and 100% perfecting every single Horizon game to date.

When not writing for DualShockers Eric can typically be found playing games on his PS5, PC, and Xbox or reading sci-fi, horror, and fantasy books/comics.

These days, remasters and remakes of older video games have become so commonplace that it's generally assumed that a handful of remasters or remakes will debut every year, with publishers often viewing these types of games as guaranteed moneymakers.

Over the years, several classic titles have received remaster or remake treatments, with some games even receiving both updated forms, such as The Last of Us being remastered in 2014 and later being remade in 2022.

Players should watch out for these eight promising open world games that are currently scheduled to launch later this year.

However, there are still several significant and fan-favorite third-person games out there that still deserve to receive a remaster or remake in order for their stories to become more easily available to modern audiences, to better connect with their larger franchises, and to ensure they don't disappear into the realm of abandonware.

10 Dante's Inferno

Visceral Games Underrated Classic

Dante's Inferno Cerberus

Visceral Games developed some of the best games of the seventh console generation. While Dead Space was masterfully remade by Motive Studio in 2023, I'd argue that their next game that should get the remaster or remake treatment should be Dante's Inferno.

A third-person hack-and-slash game similar to God of War, Dante's Inferno was an enthralling reinterpretation of Dante Alighieri's 14th-century poem The Divine Comedy, with the game following Knight Templar Dante as he cheats death and fights through the nine circles of Hell to save the soul of his beloved Beatrice.

With information about Dante's Inferno's canceled sequel recently coming to light, it'd be great to see EA revisit the game with a remake that includes aspects of the canceled sequel so that the game and Dante himself can finally receive a proper ending instead of the notorious cliffhanger fans are still waiting to be continued.

9 Lost Planet

Capcom's Sci-Fi Monster Hunter Successor

Lost Planet gameplay

In recent years, Capcom has seen many of its franchises, most notably Monster Hunter and Resident Evil, see a resurgence in popularity, but there are still several classic series that fans would love to see Capcom revisit with remasters or remakes, with one being Lost Planet.

Originally released as an Xbox 360 exclusive, Lost Planet was similar to Monster Hunter with its core concept of fighting titanic aliens and monsters on the planet E.D.N. III, but instead of using medieval weapons, players used guns or massive chain guns and rocket launcher-mounted Vital Suit mechs to take out targets.

With how popular Monster Hunter is today, Capcom should strive to remaster Lost Planet with enhanced graphics and an improved control scheme to see if Lost Planet can find renewed success in today's gaming market.

8 Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Sony's Forgotten Platformer

Completing a level in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Sony's PlayStation has been home to many popular gaming icons over the years that have sadly been abandoned during the PS4 and PS5 eras, but one that would undoubtedly reach new levels of success in the modern gaming market is Sly Cooper and his debut game, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus.

A third-person, cartoon-inspired, stealth platformer, the Thievius Raccoonus follows the raccoon Sly Cooper as he and his crew of vigilante thieves, Bentley the turtle, and Murray the hippopotamus, travel across the globe to track down the criminal Fiendish Five gang and recover pages from Cooper's long-lost, titular family book.

Sly Cooper's games brought an incredibly unique and hilarious spin to the genre of platformers and now would be the perfect time to remake his first game, especially due to how popular the kid-oriented The Bad Guys books and films are today, with The Bad Guys being very similar to Cooper's world and story.

7 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

One of Ubisoft's Greatest Games

Upcoming Games That Look Destined To Flop Prince of Persia The Sands of Time

As mentioned before, the development of remasters or remakes of classic games is very common today, but it's fairly uncommon to see publishers cancel remakes that were nearly complete, with one such case being seen with Ubisoft's remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

The Sands of Time practically revitalized the Prince of Persia franchise and set Ubisoft on the path to create the global phenomenon that is Assassin's Creed, as The Sands of Time featured a story following the titular Prince as he uses the Dagger of Time and his own parkour skills to save the sultanate of Azad and stop a vizier from turning everyone into monsters.

The Sands of Time is an absolute classic of the sixth generation of consoles, and while the original game does still hold up fairly well today, Ubisoft should strive to complete its nearly finished remake so that modern gamers can easily experience one of Ubisoft's greatest and most impactful games of all time.

6 Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Nintendo's Most Terrifying Game

Best Horror Games Still Stuck on Older Systems Eternal Darkness Sanitys Requiem

Nintendo is well-known for unofficially being considered the PG platform of the console market, but during the GameCube era, the Japanese publisher took some risks and managed to create one of the most underrated survival horror games of all time: Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

ED is basically the perfect blend between Resident Evil and Silent Hill with a twist, as the game takes place over multiple different eras following a Roman soldier, a 6th-century swordsman, an 18th-century doctor, and more, as Alexandra Rovias learns about them in the modern day and how they've all been tormented by Tome of Eternal Darkness.

The story of Eternal Darkness is unlike any other Nintendo or survival horror title, and while it didn't sell exceptionally well, it's become a fan-favorite cult classic. An updated remaster for the Nintendo Switch 2 would show that Nintendo is still capable of taking risks and giving some of its more forgotten titles a second chance.

5 Jade Empire

BioWare's Underrated Xbox Exclusive

BioWare is famous for its many RPG franchises, from the medieval Dragon Age to the sci-fi, galaxy-spanning Mass Effect, but one of their RPGs has unjustly been lost to time and forgotten by both its creators and the gaming landscape overall, with that game being Jade Empire.

Originally released as an Xbox exclusive, Jade Empire is a single-player, third-person RPG set in a fantasy and steampunk world heavily inspired by Chinese history, mythology, and kung fu martial arts, with players embodying a chi-wielding Spirit Monk who goes on an epic quest to save their kidnapped master.

In terms of world design alone, Jade Empire is one of the most unique and captivating RPGs out there, and it deserves another opportunity to be in the spotlight via either a remaster like the Mass Effect Legendary Edition or a complete remake like the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.

4 Dino Crisis

Resident Evil's Forgotten Sibling

Dino Crisis

Ever since Capcom remade the original Resident Evil in 2002, they've consistently remade most of the mainline RE titles to critical acclaim, but they should take a break from remaking RE games to remake one of their cult classics: Dino Crisis.

Much like RE, Dino Crisis is a third-person survival horror game utilizing fixed-camera angles, but what made it resonate so much with players was its atmosphere and enemies, as Dino Crisis is set in a research facility on Ibis Island overrun with bloodthirsty dinosaurs such as velociraptors and tyrannosaurus rexes.

With how popular both the Jurassic World and the Resident Evil franchises are today, a Dino Crisis remake that's in the vein of the fantastic Resident Evil 2 remake would not only sell incredibly well but potentially revive the franchise and inspire making new survival horror DC sequels.

3 Gears of War 2

Gears At Its Best

Gears of War 2 Marcus Looking At Ruined City

Xbox has slowly been remastering and remaking some of its most celebrated games, as seen with Halo: Campaign Evolved, Fable Anniversary, and the original Gears of War. However, there's one Xbox game that's been long overdue for a remaster: Gears of War 2.

For many Gears fans, Gears of War 2 is the absolute peak of the franchise in terms of its narrative and overall gameplay features, with it following Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, and the rest of Delta Squad as they take the fight to the Locust's Hollow tunnels, uncover a bit of the COG's dark past, and search for Santiago's wife Maria.

With Gears of War 1 having been remastered for PS5 and Gears of War: E-Day expected to release on Sony's as well, Xbox should strive to remaster Gears of War 2 soon so that the series' new fans can have easy access to Gears' greatest campaign.

2 Banjo-Kazooie

Rare's Greatest Franchise

Banjo-Kazooie

Rare's history under Microsoft and Xbox has been tumultuous, to say the least, but Xbox Game Studios should strive to support Rare in remaking one of their most beloved games to help attract a wider audience of gamers with that game being Banjo-Kazooie.

A third-person platformer, Banjo-Koozie has people play as the lovable bear Banjo and his trusty, backpack-residing bird friend Kazooie as they set out to save Banjo's kidnapped sister Tooty from the evil witch Gruntilda while exploring nine colorful, comical worlds, solving puzzles, collecting items, and defeating a variety of bosses.

Banjo-Kazooie was one of the best games to debut on the Nintendo 64, and it's a joy to play today, but a modern remake would give Xbox a successful platformer series of its own, be a competitor to the Super Mario games, and finally introduce Banjo to a whole new generation of gamers besides his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

1 Assassin's Creed

Altair's Critical Legacy

Assassin's Creed Swordfight

Ubisoft recently officially revealed the release date for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a remake of 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and amid the reveal, Ubisoft announced that they would be developing more AC remakes in the future, and the next one that should be remade is undoubtedly the first Assassin's Creed.

Assassin's Creed follows Desmond Miles in the modern day as he's forced by the malicious company, Abstergo, to relive the memories of his 12th-century, Holy Land residing Assassin ancestor, Altair Ibn-La'Ahad, to find locations of hidden, powerful, and ancient artifacts.

The first Assassin's Creed game is oddly the only mainline AC game that hasn't been remastered for modern platforms, but Ubisoft should strive to remake it in a similar way to Resynced in order to expand Altair's story, such as delving a bit into his past and later life, including sections from Assassin's Creed Revelations, Bloodlines, and Reflections.
