Grand Theft Auto 5 was undoubtedly one of the greatest games released in the last 20 years. It is so popular that many still play it to this day, and the online mode is constantly hitting high concurrent player counts. It is rather astounding, if I am being honest.

8 Open-World RPGs with Better Environmental Storytelling Than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the greatest games to have ever existed. Yet there are titles out there that have better storytelling than it.

Of course, all great things must come to an end, and Grand Theft Auto 6 will most likely have a new version of Grand Theft Auto Online for players to jump into. This new version of GTA Online will obviously receive some improvements, and there are some that will be necessary to see the next iteration of this multiplayer title succeed.

8 A Better Character Creator

More In-Depth

Grand Theft Auto Online Character Creator

I am by no means saying that the character creation system in Grand Theft Auto Online is bad, but it isn't the greatest one I have seen. My main issue with it is that you move a cursor around on a board to edit the look of your character.

This system was great for the era in which GTA Online was released, but better character creation systems have been released since then that allow you to modify your character more.

It would be great to see Rockstar stick with the style from GTA V, allowing you to select your parents to get a base look and go from there, but it would also be great to see more sliders to edit more about your character to give them an even better look.

7 Crossplay/Cross-Save

It's 2026...

Grand Theft Auto Online Player Driving

One of the biggest annoyances when it comes to multiplayer games is when they don't have crossplay or cross-save. This allows you to take your saves from one system to another, and it is perfect for GTA Online.

There are lots of people who play GTA Online on both console and PC, and it is annoying not being able to carry your saves over from console to PC and vice versa. It makes sense that the original GTA Online doesn't allow this, but the next iteration should for sure make it a feature.

It is 2026, and gamers tend to get the same game on multiple systems, especially if they love the title, and GTA 6 is bound to be a game that people love.

6 Gifting/Winning Cars

Transfer of Ownership

Grand Theft Auto Online Car Meet

One of the best parts of GTA Online is the ability to purchase various cars and customize them. I, for one, am a huge fan of the arena vehicles, but there are many to choose from.

An interesting addition to the future of GTA Online could be to allow players to gift vehicles to their friends. You can't currently do that in GTA Online, but it would be nice to help friends out by purchasing vehicles or properties for them.

Another great feature of this would be the ability to bet cars or properties in races against friends. Just like in real life, you could race for pink slips, and gift your friend a car if they beat you.

5 Deep Home Customization

Your Home Away From Home

Grand Theft Auto Online Inside Player Home

Part of GTA Online is owning a home that you operate out of. Your house is used as a location to meet up with friends, and an area to plan some of your heists.

Some locations also have barbers and attached garages that you can utilize. As GTA Online got better, the customization around your home got better as well, with newer locations receiving more customization options.

A new version of GTA Online needs to come with deeper customization options for your home, allowing you to place more items, decorate the walls, maybe change the layout, and more.

4 Dynamic Map Changes

Hurricanes

GTA Online Weather Thunderstorm

It has been rumored for a long time that GTA 6 will feature dynamic weather changes, and these changes will affect the map in different ways. One of which is hurricanes that can flood parts of the map.

I think that the next iteration of the online could use more dynamic weather changes, and that these weather events should alter the map. Hurricanes could flood the everglades, tornadoes could send cars flying and wreck parts of the map, and too much sunny weather could dry up fields, causing fires.

It would be interesting to see these changes, and to see how they affect the map. Even more, it would be interesting to see how players react to these weather events.

3 Destructible Environments

Players Causing Havoc

GTA Online Demolition Derby

While it would be cool to see the environment change and for it to affect the map, it would be more amazing to see part of the world actually interact with the player. GTA Online is pretty stagnant, meaning that you can't truly interact with the world outside the cars, some streetlights, and road signs.

It would be cool if part of the map was truly destructible, or if Rockstar made servers with destruction capabilities, giving players the ability to destroy buildings and blast holes in the environment.

Sure, this might get out of hand on a normal server, but private servers could allow it, or there could be one spot on the map dedicated to destruction.

2 Roleplaying Servers

They Are a Must

GTA Online Roleplaying Server

Something that rose quickly after GTA Online was launched was roleplaying servers. On these servers, many players join together to live out various types of lives, whether they be super realistic or highly stylized.

It is unique, but it is also something that Rockstar didn't do. These came about because of fans who wanted a different type of GTA Online experience. Luckily, there was word that Rockstar hired a few of the people responsible for the GTA Online roleplaying servers, which means that it is possible that official roleplaying servers could make an appearance in the next iteration of GTA Online.

This would make a lot of fans happy, and it would be nice to see new experiences play out in Leonida instead of Los Santos.

1 Heists

Start With Them

Grand Theft Auto Online Heists DLC Logo

Many don't remember that GTA Online didn't start with heists. Instead, many grinded away, robbing stores or completing jobs to get cash. This all changed when the heists DLC for GTA Online was released, as it added new ways to earn money with your friends.

Years later, and there are multiple heists to take on, with each of them offering a larger and larger payout. Some personal favorites are the Diamond Casino and Cayo Perico heists.

Anyway, as a staple of the online for Grand Theft Auto, and a staple in the series, heists should be added to the next iteration of GTA Online immediately, as it would allow for a more fun experience right off the bat.
